Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of films are shown in the DOK Market?
DOK Market presents all documentary and animated films featured at the festival. Additionally we show more than 150 further new documentaries with international sales potential, recommended by the selection committee and our partners. All presented films have been produced within the last 12 months and they reflect the philosophy of DOK Leipzig: They have a unique access to their subject, they prove the critical point of view of the director and they stand out for their aesthetic quality.
Who are the DOK Market partners?
We are happy to continue our partnership with Switzerland (Vision du réel and Swiss Films), Czech Republic (East Silver and Institute of Documentary Film), Poland (Krakow Film Foundation), Canada (Hot Docs), Chile (ChileDoc & CinemaChile) and South Eastern European countries (SEED). Moreover we are very happy to present the first results of our training initiative DOK.Incubator supporting international documentaries in post-production.
Why is marketing important for my film? What can I do?
The film market is ambitious and demanding for producers and film makers. Every film needs to envision its own marketing and distribution strategy, beyond the tried and true. Some of your colleagues have already started crowd funding campaigns, are teaming up with new interdisciplinary partners for cross media projects and are discovering the secrets of social media. Our aim for the DOK Industry is to connect you to these people, to encourage knowledge and experience exchange, to learn from each other and create space for inventive distribution and marketing. Therefore we highly recommend you to be personally present in Leipzig for some days during the Festival in order to take maximum advantage of the DOK Industry offers. To be here at DOK Leipzig is a marketing tool which film professionals should capitalize and enjoy.
What are my advantages?
Using the variety of DOK Industry opportunities, such as the daily Get Togethers, our DOK Lounges, DOK Industry Talks and much more, is the best way of approaching the film sector. To get to know each other is a key tool to enter the film industry and succeed. Furthermore you will exclusively receive our DOK Market report after the festival to retrace your screening statistics and get the contact details of industry members who watched your film.
After the festival decision makers will have the opportunity to continue viewing all films of DOK Market through the password protected myDOK-account on DOK Leipzig's website for a period of six months. This enables potential buyers, festival programmers and other film professionals to continue discovering your film(s).
Another feature of joining the DOK Market with your film is the promotion in the DOK Market catalogue and the possibility to bring promotion material with you.
Can I submit my film to the DOK Market?
It is possible to suggest a film separately, but films submitted to the festival, recommended by the selection committee, will be favoured. DOK Market is showcasing a curated selection of new documentaries, that means that not every film suggested will be included.
If your film is selected for DOK Market only (no Festival selection), a participation fee of EUR 90 (plus VAT) per film has to be paid. This fee only covers a portion of the overall costs for the digitalisation, viewing stations and publication in the catalogue. This fee is not required for films included in the festival programme.
Who is attending DOK Leipzig and the DOK Market?
The guest list 2013 is available here and this year's guest list will be online by the beginning of October. Please note, that only accredited guests have access to the contact details.
How can I meet some of the decision makers?
Please check the different offers of DOK Industry and DOK Training on our website and in the Pocket Guide available during the Festival week. There are different panels, summits, master classes, etc. where experts and industry members are present and talking about their work. Moreover we recommend you to schedule meetings some days in advance with the professionals you wish to meet in Leipzig. Please check the guest list as mentioned above.
What DOK Market is not:
DOK Market is not a platform with sales stands, trade show or pitching forum. The films are available exclusively at DOK Market during the festival week and online on the DOK Leipzig website after the festival for a period of six months. DOK Market offers a film additional publicity, but no sales guarantee.
