The Diverse Universe of Asian Documentary: About Current Initiatives and Brand New Films

Wednesday, 30 October 2013, 15:30-17:30
Polnisches Institut

Looking at the Asian Documentary means entering a universe of diverse traditions of storytelling, film making, visual aesthetics and cultural backgrounds. There is a rich experience of documentary production and distribution in Asia. But up until recently documentary film was still lacking in infrastructure in many countries. During the last years, highly involved initiatives have developed training programmes to encourage documentary filmmakers on site, support artistic film projects and build up international networks. They are preparing the ground for a creative, dynamic and fruitful documentary scene and media industry in their countries.

What are the strategies of documentary initiatives in Asia today? Under which conditions do documentary filmmakers work in specific Asian countries? Are there very distinct styles or approaches to be found in the different countries? Does European or Northern American filmmaking influence Asian colleagues? What are the differences and is there an interest to work together like in co-productions?

We have invited representatives of different documentary initiatives from Asia and Europe, who will discuss these and further questions and talk about their work and experiences.

DocWok Presentation

Following this discussion, the brand new films of DocWok, a year-long Indian training programme for documentary films in post-production will be presented. Six Indian filmmakers show trailers and clips of their finished or nearly finished projects and give the industry audience a chance to discover and support these new, outstanding films.

DocWok provides hands on training and guides filmmakers to find fresh ways of thinking about editing and dramaturgy, as well as sophisticated marketing, international film release and distribution.
