The winning film drew the judges into a completely unknown (and evidently nearly forgotten) world. Its central character is the sort of person who probably only occurs once in a documentary film maker¹s life a fascinating and mesmeric individual and the director's recording of his connection to a vanishing world of rituals and myths was both fascinating but also historically important. This film clearly benefitted from unique access, gained over a long period, and was handled with great artistry.
It exposed a world we knew nothing about, and did it in a charming, amusing and often emotional way it really covered new territory, and opened a door into a truly documentary experience.
