Kirkcaldy Man von Julian Schwanitz (Großbritannien)
„Kirkcaldy Man“ has succeeded, in a unique way, in creating the portrait of a man whom we are not going to see. The filmmaker cannot meet his hero, the former Darts champion Jocky Wilson, in person, since he has withdrawn from life – as an alcoholic suffering from a lung disease. The only remaining evidence of his former fame are old, faded TV appearances. Julian Schwanitz’ cinematic search for traces of Kirkcaldy‘s local hero leads into a deserted region, a place without hope for fame and success. The forlornness, but also the determinedness of the author’s mission to trace something irrevocably lost, gives this film a great poetic strength.
The Jury is impressed by the skilful interconnection of time levels, the thoughtful-laconic voice-over and the tender-melancholic tone of this atmospherically intense work.
