Sydämeni Taakka (Burden of My Heart) by Iris Olsson and Ives Niyongabo (Finland)
16 years after the genocide on Tutsi population by the Hutu, the Rwandan society is still in the painful process of coming to terms with the terrible events in the past, when some 800 000 people had to die in only 100 days. Being the first time behind the camera for „Burden of My Heart", Iris Olsson captures impressive, emotional and very personal pictures of various people in Rwanda. Each of them has his or her own way of mourning, whether by repression and the consumption of drugs, religiosity or discussions about past events, also with the next generation.
This film has convinced us, because it focuses on the dignified way how the people involved handle their violent past - and because of the hope it exudes that forgiveness will be possible after such genocide in times to come.
Not only has „Burden of My Heart" shocked us deeply, it has also brought us a little closer to the people of Rwanda.
