Der Kapitän und sein Pirat (The Captain and His Pirate)
In 2009 the container ship “Hansa Stavanger” and her crew were captured off the coast of Somalia by pirates and held to ransom. The German shipping company only reacted after 4 months. The media were eventually informed about the situation on board the ship only as a result of the captain’s courage and his determination to save his crew and himself. This brought the necessary pressure to bear on the German government and the shipping company, with the result that, after all, a ransom was paid.
The film made us understand that there can be respect, friendship and mutual trust between hostile parties. We were impressed that a high degree of emotional excitement was achieved with only a few original shots. With the many lively interviews, the director managed to present the two very different sides convincingly, thus enabling us to understand their differing points of view. The crew lose their confidence in the captain because he is trying to come to an understanding with the pirate, while a friendship grows between the two during the time they spend together. The pirate develops the highest respect for the captain, and this left us deeply impressed.
