Abe Koji was born in Sendai in 1955. He read Literary Studies at Tōhoku University and the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3. He published articles on French literature, especially Marcel Proust, and later articles about documentary ﬁlm, es-pecially Frederick Wiseman, Rithy Panh, and George Didi-Huberman. Today he is a professor at the Department of Literature of Yamagata University and translator of contemporary French philosophers like Jacques Derrida and Michel Serres. Since 2008 Abe Koji has been a member of the board and selection committee of the Yama-gata International Documentary Film Festival.
