Jury International Competition Documentary Film Aliona van der Horst

Aliona van der Horst, born in Moscow in 1970, studied Russian literature at the University of Amsterdam and film at the Dutch Film and Television Academy. She won an award for her debut documentary, "The Lady With the White Hat", at the 1997 Nederlands Film Festival. Other international prizes followed, including the Grand Prize of the International Festival of Films on Art in Montreal for "The Hermitage Dwellers" in 2004 and the Special Jury Prize of the Tribeca Film Festival for "Voices of Bam" in 2006. Her documentary "Boris Ryzhy" won multiple awards in 2008/2009, including the Best Documentary Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. In 2011, Horst presented her film "Water Children" at DOK Leipzig.
