DOK Leipzig awards new democracy prize

After discontinuation of the Leipziger Ring film prize, donation from well-known actor and cabaret artist Uwe Steimle makes award possible

DOK Leipzig is to award a new prize to a film on the subject of democracy and human rights. After the Stiftung Friedliche Revolution (Foundation of the Peaceful Revolution) ended its commitment to donate the Leipziger Ring film prize this year, the prize is now to be awarded in a different form. The new Silver Dove for the best film on the subject of democracy and human rights will be awarded in the International Competition Long Documentary and Animated Film and has prize money of 5,000€. The award has been made possible this year by a donation from actor and cabaret artist Uwe Steimle.

"We are very pleased with the award because a democracy prize is fully in line with our festival and with Leipzig as the city of the Peaceful Revolution", says festival director Leena Pasanen. "We wholeheartedly thank Uwe Steimle for this spontaneous decision and political act. The donation gives us all the more encouragement to continue to have a democracy prize at the festival. We are now looking for long-term support for this important award." Furthermore, Leena Pasanen acknowledges the longstanding involvement of the Stiftung Friedliche Revolution: "Above all we'd like to give due credit to the foundation, for it was their support that made the awarding of a prize to a film on the subject of democracy and human rights possible in the first place."

This year the award will be given to one of the twelve films nominated for the International Competition Long Documentary and Animated Film. The jury for this competition will therefore be casting an additional vote on the democracy prize and awarding two prizes at the end of the festival.

Uwe Steimle gives the reason for his donation as follows: "The spirit of peaceful, non-violent revolution must not be forgotten and the directors who make films about this important subject must be supported."

The prize for the best film on the subject of democracy and human rights will be awarded at the ceremony on 5 November at the CineStar cinema.

The Leipziger Ring film prize was awarded at DOK Leipzig between 2010 and 2015 and the award ceremony took place in Leipzig's Nikolaikirche.

DOK Leipzig will be announcing further prizes in this year's edition of the festival on 27 October.
