Freitag-Salon: Arab Spring — Reality of a Revolution

2011 is the year of the revolution in the Arab world. First Tunisia drove out its long-standing ruler, Ben Ali, and then Egypt toppled the Mubarak dictatorship. The fire of revolution subsequently spread through Libya, while in Syria and Yemen the fight against the ruling regimes continues on, though the conclusion is far from certain. The focus on the Arab world in DOK Festival's International Programme follows recent pressing events, and many of the films were created under difficult conditions. Among the questions that will be explored during the panel discussion: How important is the media as an amplifier of protests? Is there a protest aesthetic that unifies the movements in Arab countries? What role will the former opposition movements now play?

Following the discussion, ARTE presents an in-depth cross-media platform on the subject of the Arab democracy movements: "The Arab world in Revolution(s)".
