AG DOK extends an invitation to a thematic session on film funding.

Television has hijacked German film funding. A producer who does not have a television broadcast station on board shouldn't even bother to submit an application. The obstacles for films that are produced independently of television are increasingly more difficult, because creative and artistically ambitious productions rarely find a TV slot. Instead, those projects are subsidised to suit the wants and needs of television. This means that the companies which profit from these endowments are increasingly the affiliates and subsidiaries of the broadcast companies.

While the German regional film funds increasingly wind up in the choppy waters of the broadcast stations, the German Federal Film Board (FFA) is struggling for survival.

Can the German film funding system free itself from the stranglehold of television? Will the FFA weather the crisis as the most important cinema film fund that is independent of location? And how will independent film production be possible in the future?
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of its existence, the German Documentary Filmmakers Association/AG DOK has invited well-known industry figures to discuss these issues in Leipzig.
