DAFILMS: Event of the Week 14 - 20 May

"The Mosquito Problem and Other Stories" by Andrey Paounov (Bulgaria 2007)
This week the Dafilms portal presents a considerable portion of European “exoticism”. Take a trip through the unique landscape of the Balkans with three remarkable documentaries. Although the protagonists of The Shutka Book of Records, The Mosquito Problem and Bahtalo! are rather poor, do not expect a heavy social drama. One can only live merrily without money! From May 14, you can watch the three films for free for a whole week.

Winner of the DOK Talent Dove Selected for Cannes

Sponsoring of the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig pays off

"Sofia's Last Ambulance" by Ilian Metev (Germany/Bulgaria/Croatia 2012)/ A production by Sutor Kolonko, Nukleus Film & SIA in association with Chaconna Films / Broadcasters: WDR and ARTE

The new film by Ilian Metev, winner of the DOK Leipzig 2008 Talent Dove, has made it into the “Semaine de la Critique” competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The 30-year-old Metev developed his documentary “Sofia’s Last Ambulance” using the prize money sponsored by the Media Foundation of the Sparkasse Leipzig. Since 2004, the Media Foundation has annually donated 10,000 Euros to be awarded with the Talent Dove for the specific purpose of serving as start-up financing for the award winner’s next documentary film project.

In 2008, Metev won the Talent Dove for his film “Goleshovo”, a portrait of life in a remote Bulgarian mountain village. His new work tells of the hard and sometimes absurd working life of doctors in an emergency ambulance in the Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Ilian Metev’s current success at Cannes proves that the Media Foundation provides sustainable support to talented upcoming filmmakers. The renowned Cannes International Film Festival will take place from 16 to 27 May 2012.

By the way, Ilian Metev has already announced his intention to bring “Sofia’s Last Ambulance” to this year’s Leipzig festival.
