Witnesses Undesirable – About the Power of Documentary Pictures in Repressive Systems

20 years ago, the pictures of the Monday demonstrations in Leipzig still had to be smuggled across the border under rather complicated conditions. Provided you had a video camera in the first place. Nowadays, everybody has a mobile telephone. And Internet. Pictures from the demonstrations in Tehran after the elections reached us in virtually no time. A direct link between the sender and the addressee. News editors need no longer act as brokers, as "sorting offices". But what does this brave new media world mean to us?
