Niels Pagh Andersen is one of the most renowned documentary and feature film editors in Denmark. Born in 1958, he started his career as assistant of the legendary Danish editors Christian Hartkopp and Janus Billeskov Jansen. He has edited more than 250 films as a freelance editor since 1979. Pagh Andersen also writes scripts and teaches at film schools and universities across the globe. In 2005, he received the prestigious Roos Award for oustanding achievements in documentary film.
Full of respect for the material entrusted to him, Pagh Andersen separates the essential from the dispensable, senses stories and carefully develops his characters. His sense of rhythm and his musicality help him create extraordinary films. Among his award-winning documentaries are: ”Betrayal” by Fredrik von Krusenstjerna (1995), ”The War Within” by John Fuegi and Jo Frances (1996), ”Portal to Peace” by Thomas Stenderup (1997), ”Welcome to Denmark” by Erlend E. Mo (2003), ”The 3 Rooms of Melancholia” by Pirjo Honkasalo (2004) or ”Prostitution behind the Veil” by Nahid Persson (2004).
How do you condense reality into a cinematic narrative? How do you develop characters in a documentary film? What distinguishes the rhythm of a good film? How do you create poetry? In his Master Class, Danish editor Niels Pagh Andersen will offer some fascinating insights into his work process.
