1. DOK Market - What's that?

The DOK Market is a place where accredited festival guests can screen the best recent documentary and animated films at individual viewing stations. In 2009, there will be 30 booths. Each of them has a computer with a monitor and headphones for one or two people. Viewers can choose from around 300 films and call them up from a secure server, watch as much or as little of them as they like at their digital viewing station, take notes for themselves, leave comments for the filmmakers or e-mail them directly from the computer. It's basically a mediatheque with added communication features.

2. What's the DOK Market for?

The aim of the DOK Market is to support international distribution of the films presented. International festival representatives, commissioning editors and television buyers, theatrical and television distributors can discover the most promising recent productions. The DOK Market is aimed at busy industry professionals who need to squeeze a large number of films into their schedules, take notes, and possibly make contact with the filmmakers. It is a work area.

3. Which films are available to view in the DOK Market?

All current films from the festival programme are also available in the DOK Market.

In addition to the festival films, DOK Leipzig's selection committee recommends approximately one hundred further films specifically for the market. These films are usually taken from the entries submitted.

Finally, our partners East Silver (Czech Republic), Krakow Film Foundation (Poland), Visions du Réel / Swiss Films (Switzerland), Sheffield Doc/Fest (Great Britain), Guangzhou International Documentary Film Festival (China) and Taiwan International Documentary Festival (Taiwan) present a selection from their programmes in the DOK Markt.

4. Who can view films in the DOK Market?

Anybody with a festival accreditation can use the DOK Market. Priority is given to those with a so-called "Industry" Accreditation: commissioning editors, television buyers, cinema or festival programmers, and distributors. Industry professionals can also reserve viewing stations in advance.

5. I would like to present my film in the DOK Market. What do I do?

Films with international sales potential are recommended for the DOK Market by the festival's selection committee and our partners around the world. We then contact the filmmakers with information on how they can join the market. If you think we missed a film that should be included, please contact our Market Producer Susanne Guggenberger:

We want the best films for the market and consider all suggestions seriously. At the same time, the DOK Market is a selective market. This means that we make choices, not every documentary willing to participate is included. The decision lies with DOK Leipzig.

6. What's the deadline for entering films into the DOK Market 2010?

Entries for the DOK Market 2010 will be accepted from Mid-July. More details will be announced on this web site closer to the time.

7. What happens after the festival week?

Once the festival is over, we e-mail personal screening reports to everybody who viewed films in the DOK Market and to all filmmakers who presented their films.

Reports for viewers list all the films they saw together with the sales contacts. They also include any comments they wrote for the filmmakers and personal notes.

Reports for filmmakers provide names, job titles and contact details for everybody who viewed their film. If viewers left any comments, these are also included in the report.

8. Do I have to be in Leipzig to present my film in the DOK Market?

No. One of the attractions of the DOK Market is that it allows viewers to see films in their own time without scheduling appointments. The communication features and screening reports are designed to make it easy for viewers and filmmakers to contact each other wherever they are in the world.

9. Does it help my film if I come to Leipzig in person?

Yes, if you promote your film. Some filmmakers are very active drawing attention to their film during the festival week.

10. A trip to Leipzig is out of the question. Is there anything I can do to support my film from the distance?

Yes. First of all, make sure you present it well in the DOK Market catalogue and send the materials in on time. This catalogue lists all DOK Market films with a film still, a brief synopsis, and relevant contact information. If your film looks interesting in the catalogue, more people will watch it!

The printed catalogue is distributed to industry professionals in Leipzig. After the festival, it is mailed to approximately 170 further international television buyers around the world.

Send us your posters, postcards and flyers! We will hang up posters in the DOK Market and distribute your flyers and postcards on our information tables. Just make sure that materials reach us by Friday, 15. October.

Finally, use your contacts and spread the word. If you know of people attending DOK Leipzig, let them know that your film will be there!

11. How much does it cost to present a film in the DOK Market?

We charge a market fee of 96.30 euro (90.00 euro 7% VAT). This fee goes towards the cost of digitising the films, running the market and publishing the catalogue. If a film is also playing in the festival, it will automatically be included in the DOK Market free of charge.

12. What does the DOK Market not do?

The DOK Market is not a market with stalls, it's not a tradeshow, it's not a pitching event. It is not a meeting point or a place for negotiations, but a quiet place to work. The DOK Market is not an online platform accessible year-round, it is set up and taken down every year to run concurrently with the DOK Leipzig festival. The DOK Market makes films available to industry professionals, it does not guarantee a sale.
