In many cases, personal stories create the basis of an animated documentary film. Often it is the filmmakers themselves who tell the story and transform their perspective on an experience into animation. But the experience of others can also be documented in Animadoc.

The Podium will introduce two current productions in which the story being told in the film is someone else's. Canadian Ann Marie Fleming will present „I Was A Child Of Holocaust Survivors", which is to be screened at this year's Animation Competition at Dok Leipzig. The filmmaker used Bernice Eisenstein's book with the same name as the basis for this film, in which she has the author herself relating her memories of her father and her childhood.

Another guest will be Andy Glynne, psychologist, and founder of the London Documentary Filmmakers Group (DFG). He created the series „Animated Minds" in 2003. In individual, four-minute episodes, mentally ill persons describe their personal experiences. These become symbolic of the progression and symptomology of their respective disorders. Through the animated pictures, the emotions that are described become visually comprehensible for others in a congenial manner.

At the DOK Podium the two directors will discuss the possibilities of documentary content in animation and, by means of the submitted projects as examples, elucidate the principles of development of animated documentary films.

Hosted by:

Annegret Richter
