Building a Framework for Respectful Romani Representation

DOK Industry Workshop 2026

Building a Framework for Respectful Romani Representation

small

How can film create space for respectful  and community-rooted Roma and Sinti representation?

This workshop begins by exploring how antigypsyism has shaped film history and continues to influence how Roma and Sinti stories are imagined, produced and received. We then turn to practice: what does respectful representation require?

Through pair and small-group work, participants will test a developing framework for Roma and Sinti representation in visual media. Together, we will explore creative choices, storytelling, production structures, commissioning and funding, asking what works, what is missing and what needs to change.

The aim is to help shape a practical, evolving resource. Insights shared will directly inform its continued development.

Hosted by The Romani Filmmakers Network and The Critical Film & Image Hub, in collaboration with DOK Leipzig.
