Chico Pereira (United Kingdom) for the film
The media have reported only the worst and have long lost interest in them: the miners and heavy industry workers who, apart from suffering colonial exploitation, made the old Europe great and rich. But one of them is left, stoically chain-smoking in well-framed black & white: the pensioned Spanish miner Pablo. He has little left in his twilight years except for a shadow on his lung and an obese grandson who trips over his supporting wheel. Saint Barbara, the miners’ patron saint, will note with pleasure and a smile that young filmmakers approach this clandestine world with as much loving care and eagerness as if they wanted to make a feature film.
