Helke Misselwitz was born in Zwickau in 1947. She began her career as an assistant director for GDR television in the 1970s and studied directing at the Film and Television University in Potsdam-Babelsberg from 1978 to 1892. From 1985 to 1988 she attended Heiner Carow's Master Class at the GDR Academy of the Arts. She worked at the DEFA Documentary Studio in Berlin until 1991 and was a partner of Thomas Wilkening Filmproduktionsgesellschaft from 1990 to 2000. Misselwitz has been a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of the Arts since 1991 and a professor of directing at the Film and Television University "Konrad Wolf" in Potsdam-Babelsberg since 1997. Her films won multiple awards at festivals all over the world, including the Leipzig Silver Dove for "Winter Adé" in 1988.
