An attempt to reunite two stories that are still neatly separated in the public discourse: the German occupation of Belgium in the First World War and the Belgian colonisation of the Congo in the 19th century. While one is taught at schools and universities as a matter of course, the other rarely makes it into the curriculum – even historiography has its hierarchies. The bracket for both is “Bully Beef”, the canned beef that became the proverbial soldiers’ rations.

In this first film of her “Salvation Project”, Morris addresses the religious baggage with which South Africa has furnished her. She, who describes herself as “atheist-agnostic-apostatic”, looks for the causes of her love of consecrated rooms and sacral architecture, her fascination with misbelievers and heretics, her dislike of religious rituals and institutions. In the process, she combs through the immigration history of South Africa to find all the immigration waves that washed up missionaries and religious refugees on its shores since the 17th century.

“Off the Record” explores the unequal treatment of black and white soldiers who fought in Europe during the First World War. It starts with two documents: the war diary of Walter, the filmmaker’s great-uncle, as well as a report by the writer Sol Plaatje, composed in 1917, about many black South Africans’ frustrating attempts to maintain their place in the midst of an ongoing war. The frequent intersection points between both stories are taken up by the artistic animation.

The eponymous book, the visual and intellectual centre of this film from the Salvation cycle, is a collection of engravings and poems about English country life. It was presented as a school prize to Morris’s great-grandfather’s brother in the 1860s: a boy from the dusty, rocky landscape of the Cape of Good Hope came across pictures of luscious European meadows. Not much has changed since then, the filmmaker reports. She remembers her own childhood, when all the pictures, stories and books came from other parts of the world, and wonders how foreign and own experiences fit together.

Perth+6hrs Wendy Morris

The shortest film in Morris’s Salvation cycle, it unfolds from a single drawing a very personal reflection on the transience of family, the ephemerality of childhood and the inevitability of parting.

What do European tourists expect from a vacation in the “Third World”? The title was taken from the slogan of a travel brochure that invites its customers to get a hearty “taste” of the world. That’s what it’s there for, the advertising’s subtext suggests – a huge smorgasbord for the discerning expert, for the Eurocentric with too much leisure time on his hands who takes the liberty of helping himself at will: on the culinary, sexual, economical, or cultural level.
