Jestin Coler’s fake news empire arguably swayed the 2016 U.S. election. Ordained “The Fake News King” by National Public Radio, Jestin Coler built a network of websites meant to “infiltrate the echo chambers of the alt-right”. His empire soon grew to mimic the media monolith it satirized. As 2020 approaches and Coler’s techniques are adopted by armies of fake news purveyors, virality and reality intertwine in front of our eyes. Is truth in the eye of the beholder?
To millions of Americans, the term “fake news” itself has come to describe not peddlers of falsehoods but the traditional news media. Have we opened Pandora’s Box in the age of “post-truth politics” or exposed a fundamental weakness buried in the spine of “Truth” as we know it?
In the famously flubbed words of former president George W. Bush: “There’s an old saying in Tennessee… Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me, can’t get fooled again.” Or can we?

What does it mean to be safe in school in the United States? Safe from what, and from whom? Bulletproof poses and complicates these questions through a provocative exploration of fear and American violence.
Bulletproof explores the complexities of violence in schools by looking at the strategies employed to prevent it. The film observes the longstanding rituals that take place in and around American schools: homecoming parades, basketball practice, morning announcements, and math class. Unfolding alongside these scenes is a collection of newer traditions: lockdown drills, teacher firearms training, metal detector screenings, and school safety trade shows. Bulletproof asks what these rituals reflect back at us, looking beyond immediate causes and responses to mass shootings in a cinematic meditation on the array of forces that shape the culture of violence in the United States.

A scrappy little earthworm is sick of being a worm. He ditches his belly-crawling, mud-chomping friends and follows around a couple of caterpillars. He tries to eat a leaf, but can’t. He tries to walk on legs like them, but can’t. He even tries to fly, but he just can’t fit in, no matter how hard he tries. It won’t be long, however, before he’ll have to use his worminess to save the day!

Shot on 16mm in national military parks, swamps, forests, and the suburban sprawl across the former battlefields, the film follows General Grant’s path liberating the southern United States from the white supremacist republic that took over half the country. Part travelogue, part essay film, part landscape documentary, it moves from the Texas-Louisiana border to a prison island off the coast of New England. But instead of relying on actors, vintage photos, and the sounds of bullets and explosions, the battles are illustrated with the paper reenactments of Hex and Counter wargames and bubblegum cards from the hobbyist gamer subcultures that have sprung up around the Civil War. The sound and music are inspired by the 70’s crime films to celebrate the destruction of the Confederacy. But the losers get nothing. Stripped down sound design and no music. Grant and the liberation crew on the other hand get the 70’s and 80’s synth jams they deserve.

Truth or Consequences is a speculative documentary about time and how we weave the past into the present and our possible future. Set in the small desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, the film takes place in the shadow of the world's first commercial Spaceport. Subtly set in a near future when space travel has begun, the film follows five residents who stayed. Combining documentary, archival, experimental virtual reality worlds, and an improvised score by Bill Frisell, Truth or Consequences is a lyrical meditation on progress, history, and how we navigate a sense of loss within ourselves and a changing world.

Bill Clinton’s strange legacy as President of the United States and ringmaster of the 1990s is a mess of public amnesia, nostalgia, and scorn. William Jefferson Wilderness is a personal exploration of that legacy, and of the tangled process of consigning a former political hero to history.
