In times of terror and blue algae, cruises have replaced the holiday resorts in Antalya and the Costa Brava as the perfect travel destination for package tourists. The ships move across the global seas like floating cities and the never-ending spectacle aboard makes shore excursions almost redundant. Once you’re immersed in the structure of forced pleasures you can have ceaseless fun with aerobics, dancing competitions and captain’s dinners. At least while your money holds out.

Fishermen on the Ghanaian coast going about their daily business – or at least the work they must do to ultimately have some kind of business (perhaps). In the same spirit, filmmaker Elke Groen, in her respectful and reserved observation, has no preconceptions of what the ultimate result of this material shot on one day in May 2016 is to be. So this is no quick report in which everything is eventually reduced to one pithy idea, but the cinematographic creation of an experience space.

Offscreen voices remember a childhood in Mariupol, happy days by the sea. With their schoolmates they had planted willow trees that still grace the shore, more than fifty years later. Today the beach is deserted, only a few fishermen are waiting for a catch. Even the deepwater port seems abandoned. The armed conflict in eastern Ukraine has changed everything overnight. The holiday region is now a dangerous exclusion zone. What’s left are the memories.

Every evening blood-red lips are smacked – the highlight of a monotonous work routine in reliable solitude. Day out: microwaved meat. Day in: the banal horror of a meat industry production line. Fatten, gut, cut to pieces and wrap conveniently. But what if one’s personified conscience turns up, stares out of the next piece of meat or tempts one to an evening of wine-drinking? A grotesque in delicate black and white lines with shrill touches of colour.

Locked into a transparent cube that contains nothing but a fridge and a few angular objects, a skinny woman is confronted with an enemy: the soft, undefined form. It arrives in the shape of a chicken egg that the woman is supposed to eat, because that’s what her diet plan which commands her to gain weight says. The egg provokes desire and panic at the same time. Eating it is nothing less than the worst case scenario.

Eight-year-old Laura gets a letter from her father containing a rabbit story that explains his absence. Based on real interviews, Catalina Vásquez Salazar constructs a disturbing story in which the visual and textual levels are initially far apart. The adolescent daughter approaches reality only through gradually exposed inconsistencies and alarming impressions as she frequently visits her father in jail.

A deceptively quiet park in the mist. Mysterious things are happening: a woman disappears, trees fall as if struck by a sudden weakness, and shots ring out. Surveillance cameras observe crows from unfamiliar perspectives. They are the protagonists here – it’s a well-known fact that they are among the most intelligent birds. The camera in their territory: is it a friend or an enemy? A commotion ensues, the crows move to attack. Or are we just imagining all this?

A romance in Arkhangelsk, based on a story by Boris Shergin, inspired by the Russian avant-garde and naïf folk art. This animated time machine delves deep into the past, dissolves perspectives and: makes everything new again. Cats are there, but not the right woman. Love is there, but must be searched. Soviet reality is woven in – drinkers, peasants and cattle – as well as a rich soundtrack in which a dreamy fairytale Russian has the dialect of the White Sea.

Staccato confessions of music students reveal the field of tension between coercion, self-discipline and the overwhelming joy of making music. Miloš Tomić transforms his obsession with music schools by drawing visualised sounds and tragicomic miniature scenes. Educational tricks, idiosyncratic teachers’ spleens, recalcitrant violin strings, failing in the face of too-high expectations with tea cups on the back of one’s hand and a piano score – as if we had been there.

Everything begins with a woman looking from a circus caravan at the magician and his rabbit in the snow. The look is followed by bathing in the nude, a wedding feast as gay as a fair, then the easy companionship of vaulting circus acrobats. All this is conjured out of the hat of the past and the future – because this is about love that lasts a lifetime. Roberto Catani celebrates great and small moments under twinkling stars in a tender and melancholy whirl of colours.

The eighties, UK: three mates move to Liverpool to study art. Their leader is Shirley, the cool pub quiz champion. But he soon turns out to be a delinquent flatmate, the back rent is piling up, the rough tone becomes bullying: itching powder in underpants, the love interest seduced by another at a party. The mates are in the shit at all levels. How far can they still go? Who will surrender first?

A cinematic game with the oldest stories of the world in Brazil. The visible and the invisible exist side by side and can be recorded. Scratched drawings in caves, vanished animals, Guaraní creation myths, children’s games and thinking rocks. Add as visible evidence: the contemporary and ancient film and sound recording technologies that were used.

In juggling the flying objects seem connected by an invisible thread; the same kind on which these stories are threaded, in which someone strings pinned spiders in a chain, someone else is carried through a dark forest in a box. Then there is the strand of muscles and intestines from which flows a red scarf that a girl wears round her neck. Mysterious, uncanny goings-on – seemingly insane, but quite normal.

Being a school kid is a pimply monster – mostly dozing, often hard to inspire, with a penchant for being capricious and annoying. The faculty tremble, pull desperate faces and throw the long formula lasso. A funny-sounding report, apparently scribbled directly by a kid into the maths notebook. And somehow timeless.

Observed at close range, life behind the walls of the oldest Polish nunnery is different from what one would expect. The twelve sisters, almost all of them over 70, manage their daily life with assiduousness and humour. A portrait of a community of solidarity, where individual weaknesses are tolerated by all, unfolds between work, prayer and games night. The outside is ruled by other values: it’s where the faithful “order” prayers for financial success and “nun” doesn’t look like a dream job.
