The subway station is going crazy. The call box wants to bring about world peace like the Dalai Lama, the construction area light is heartbroken and the newspaper vending machines belt out a hit song from the eighties. A street filled with rhythm and passion.

Give it up for Martha and Niki! The two win one street dance battle after the other and even end up the first female team to win the world championship. Once on top, however, they run out of steam and the big questions afterwards about who you are and where you want to go raise their heads. Martha in particular is overcome by a feeling that she’s in the wrong place. The film tells of the balance between having one’s head in the clouds and keeping one’s feet on the ground and about how hard it is to really get there.

Refusing to be tamed, rejecting the “fancy job” in the art world and taking on the big advertising agencies? MissMe shows us how to do it. Her street art also casually sweeps away female stereotypes and shows us what beauty can, even must be. “Who run the world? Girls!”

“Reclaim the Streets” is the battle cry ringing from the walls of cities around the world. In Berlin, where artists can do their work fairly openly in daylight, in New York, where graffiti have become an indispensable part of the city, or in Moscow, where the authority’s painting over of the “pieces” looks like a very special form of street art. There are also some statements by one of the pioneers of street art, Blek le Rat, who shows us that his art works in galleries and in the streets.

“I got love for the underdog.” Boots Riley is not a capitalist for he knows the seamy side of the land of opportunity. Class struggle is what drives his art, not selling out, fame or fortune. Hip-hop is the boombox for his political vision.

Los Aldeanos and Silvito el Libre are Cuban hip-hop artists. The whole island listens to their music which can be bought only under the counter at the local greengrocer’s. They are rebels in the land of eternal revolution. The three are allowed to leave the country only after Cuba begins to open up. On the trip they are surprised by their worldwide fame and also by the fact that here, too, everything is determined by others. All that keeps them together is the music they share and their love for Cuba.
