Cinema turned 100. With his homage Heinrich Sabl went one short step further back into the prehistory of cinematography for a run-up. Individual images are set in motion in a praxinoscope, invented by Émile Reynaud in 1877. A pedestrian seizes this illusion as an occasion to walk out of the magic cylinder through scenes from international film history.

Agit pop art condensed and charged to the maximum. Frenetic ingenuity full of a genuinely materialist sensuality and a visually powerful forward thrust. In terms of content: a cinematic brotherly kiss on the occasion of the death of Bác Hồ, also known as Hồ Chí Minh (1890–1969). Also: formulating the certainty that the fight will go on, must go on.

The winner of the first golden “Animation Dove”: nine years of war between Greeks and Trojans have gone past. The impulsive Patroclus, comrade in arms and bed mate of the rather battle-weary Achilles, thinks that victory can be achieved by other means. The tragedy takes its course – just as it was passed down in the classical myths but supplemented by what they left unspoken.

Ten years after its premiere, Kamar Ahmad Simon’s film has lost nothing of its bitter topicality. In 2022, too, millions of people are fleeing floods after heavy rainfall in Bangladesh, hundreds of villages are flooded or completely cut-off. On 27 May 2009, cyclone Aila hit the Bangladeshi coast. The community portrayed in “Are You Listening!” has settled in a makeshift home on an old dyke and keeps stubbornly waiting for the new one to be built. With a fine sense for absurd situations, the filmmaker documents a daily life marked by the determination to return one day against all odds.

A genius of independent cinema looks back on his hitherto unrecognized work. From now on he will leave this unprofitable art well alone, be part of the big business, sell himself and be bought. A brilliant future seems within reach. A torrent of buzzwords from the beginner’s guide to self-marketing. Burning ambition. Caustic sarcasm. Biting irony.

Two different planets: men and women. What used to be one in paradise was divided by original sin. Ever since then, the sexes have been facing each other in conflict, all the while consumed with longing for a reunion. Expectations are high, the excitement is immense, the imagination is boundless. A day in the garden of carnal delights – from ecstasy to exhaustion and back.

The core of this film is a long interview with the infamous West German mercenary Siegfried Müller, supplemented by sequences shot for “Commando 52”. “The Laughing Man” broke new stylistic ground at the time. On the one hand it is regarded as a milestone of GDR film history, but on the other hand its production history and style make it one of the most controversial documentaries ever.

The protagonists or rather heroes of this first film by Adina Pintilie are inhabitants of a psychiatric home in Romania. It’s taken for granted that God speaks here, and the “lunatics” very politely discuss who rules the rain. This debut film was celebrated all over the world as a poetical and political masterpiece and won the DOK Leipzig Golden Dove in 2007.

What’s growing in that empty space there? On 17 December 2010, the Tunisian grocer Mohamed Bouazizi burns himself to death in public – the Arab Spring begins, the fire spreads through the Internet. A fast-forward trip through the interior architecture of a modern revolution, right into the dispersed character of the event: from the planet’s surfaces to digital de-spatialization.

A short yes and a long but. A man in a plaid shirt says a friendly hello and rhapsodizes about travelling to southern countries. But when he returns, he finds those southern foreigners have been swept, yes, into Switzerland. That’s not good. Not good at all! Every sentence fires up the next. The longer his hate-rant lasts, the redder and madder the otherwise friendly plaid man grows.
