Synopsis
Birthday cake was introduced to China in the late Qing Dynasty around the early 20th century. As a symbol of Western culture and commodity economy, its popularity is closely related to the political climate of the modern and contemporary era. Starting from the artist's childhood birthday scenes, this essay film explores factors such as Chinese-style birthday cakes, KFC and McDonald's birthday party services, and the Chinese economic reform. It attempts to clarify how birthday cakes and their associated rituals have become the primary way of celebrating birthdays for modern Chinese people, as well as the localisation of birthday cakes in China. The investigation covers newspapers, news reports, films, family archives, Chinese-style cake decoration tutorials, etc.
