I Is Another: Relational Documentary Practices with Ollie Launspach
If art comes from a deeply personal place, can filmmaking ever be too personal? Taking cues from his short film kiss kiss bang bang, showing at this year's DOK Leipzig, Dutch director Ollie Launspach talks to host Savina Petkova (Talking Shorts) about the vulnerability inscribed in documenting one's own relationship. In his film, Launspach turns the camera onto his partner, Sterre, and together they create an intimate portrait of togetherness and transition. Diaries, audio recordings, and home video footage make up the radically intimate world of kiss kiss bang bang, but making a film out of your life is not an easy feat. What follows is a candid, much-needed conversation about becoming a protagonist in your own film, representing doubt in an intuitive process, as well as the unexpected outcomes of personal storytelling.
