Arte Masterclass Sergei Loznitsa Directing the archive
60 years DOK Leipzig and 20 years of creative documentary on ARTE, this is something to celebrate together! The TV slot Die Spätvorstellung / La Lucarne is one of the last remaining places for artistic freedom in the television landscape. Sergei Loznitsa one of its most emblematic filmmakers, whose films have been featured many times in this space, as was his first documentary awarded a Golden Dove at DOK Leipzig in 1996. For this reason we choose him for a special cooperative masterclass to celebrate our shared vision.
Sergei Loznitsa teaches a masterclass about the use of found footage, the interpretation of “extraneous” images, about the frontlines between documentary and fiction, about the formative power of montage and the conflict between ideological prerogatives of interpretation.
Using excerpts from his previous award-winning films including Blockade, Revue and The Event, and a special sneak-peek of clips from his new archive-based project The Trial, in co-production with ARTE France, Loznitsa will discuss his own creative process, from initial ideas to realisation. Documentary, fiction, propaganda, art, archive access, research, formulation, financing, let’s take a deep dive into his world.
