Film History and Archives in the Digital Age

Di 29.10 12:00 Zeitgeschichtliches Forum

Film archives provide concise knowledge of films and film history. In this digital age, it is important that these resources are available online and in the best cases, also the films themselves. This panel will explore two projects realising this challenge.

Kay Hoffmann from the Documentary Film Centre (Haus des Dokumentarfilms) in Stuttgart and Inga Selck from the Filmmuseum Potsdam will present a database of German non-fiction films (www.db.dokumentarfilmgeschichte.de). It is one result of a long-term project “History of Documentary Film in Germany 1945 to 2005”, supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). This database makes it possible to systematically search for documentary films for free, for the first time. After seven years of filmographic work, there are now around 15,000 records of German non-fiction films produced after 1945.

Gunnar Dedio from PROGRESS will present the new online archive platform www.progress.film, which hosts more than 17,000 films produced between 1946 and 1990 by DEFA and/or distributed by PROGRESS, the sole film distributor of East Germany. It is the only collection worldwide that pools the entire film production of a country on one platform. PROGRESS invested heavily in this bilingual AI-supported archive platform for researchers worldwide, which continuously adds collections from different sources and origins.

If you can’t beat them – join them!“

Zum Auftakt wird Thomas Riedelsheimer das Fortbildungsprojekt für junge Dokumentarfilmschaffende „Musenraum“ vorstellen.

MEET THE FILMMAKERS

Mi 30.10 11:30 Festival Centre, Basement Floor

Which passport for a film?

From an economic perspective, that is, thinking in terms of ownership and rights, this may be a simple question, and indeed it doesn’t require a complex answer: Whoever has the money calls the shots and determines the nationality. A certificate of origin is what this is called! And even in situations involving multiple citizenship, definite answers can be given in this area. A film is to a major extent a production from country X because lots of money comes from there, and it’s to a minor extent a production from country Y because less money comes from there, et cetera, et cetera – just follow the money, stupid!

However, just one step away from this flow of money, the reality appears to be more nuanced. Beneath, beside or beyond the economic and legal coordinates, there are realities that determine the nature and guise of a documentary film.

Which country, for example, should designate a Luxembourgian production developed by an Egyptian filmmaker which is to be shot in Taiwan? This idea can be illustrated using lots of further examples, and the problem soon becomes clear: Which passport does a film receive, and on what basis? A discussion with filmmakers who face often this question.

Aesthetic Interventions – Documentary Practices in Contemporary Croatian Cinema

The current documentary film scene in Croatia is notable for its diverse aesthetic approaches, ranges of topics, and independent as well as large-scale productions. Since the 1990s, this small country has seen the development of large-scale and internationally significant documentary film initiatives, festivals and productions that, while keeping pace with the times, have taken a strong position in negotiating societal realities.

But how does the search for truth in documentary films evolve? How does cinematic reality negotiate the world around us, and how can documentary cinematography actively engage with societal circumstances? We discuss these and other topics with prominent representatives of the Croatian documentary film scene – from the university to directors, producers, documentary film festivals and film associations – and get a glimpse that will expand the programme of films in our Country Focus: a glimpse of the flourishing documentary film scene in the latest country to join the EU.

Slow Cinema in Iranian Film

This year five Iranian documentary films have been selected for the festival’s Official Selection. Each film may be different from the other, but one common characteristic is their unusual temporal approach, that is, that time passes differently to how DOK Leipzig audiences might be used to. Time passes more slowly, leaving the impression the films are longer than they really are. A viewer’s patience is put to the test, however, this doesn’t mean the films are sluggish or long-winded. The seconds and minutes simply flow differently. Time does not proceed uniformly, linearly and unambiguously; instead, it is filled in qualitatively varied ways – sometimes densely, sometimes loosely, sometimes piecemeal, sometimes in big chunks. These challenging films however come with a big payoff: delightful experiences of narrative structures different to the Aristotelean model Western audiences are accustomed to. Are we dealing with a particular idiom in current Iranian documentary film? Or a secret? Or quite simply with dramaturgy and technique?

Animation grown up

In the 1990s, American series such as South Park, The Simpsons or American Dad lured young people and adults to TV screens. Now, it’s Netflix that attracts this target group with shows like BoJack Horesman or Disenchantment. Critics are also describing the recently-released series Undone as a ground-breaking and genre-bending adult animated comedy drama series. Animation for adults in mainstream platforms and packages may come as a surprise to audiences, but comparing it with animated short films or the works of up-and-coming talents and students, it is clear that there are more animations for adults on offer than for children.

These animation productions often deal with mature topics, philosophical or political issues. They are experimental and wild and very rarely cute. However in Germany it is children’s animation that still rules the distribution streams. AG Animationsfilm, the German Animation Association, will discuss this overlooked subject in Germany with the director of Undone, local German producers and representatives of TV channels, looking for new inspiration and models for our industry.

Masterclass: Tan Pin Pin

Fr 01.11 11:30 Polnisches Institut

Singapore is only about the size of Hamburg, but nearly three times as

many people live in that space. It’s no wonder, then, that stories seem

to pile up in that Southeast Asian city-state. How does one find all these

people, given a voice by Tan Pin Pin in so many of her works, within a

culture that officially values inconspicuously conformist behaviour?

And when does she know how to tell their stories and communicate

their views and ideas – as full of different creative approaches as her

work is? How does one deal with the explicit as well as the unspoken

boundaries imposed by an illiberal parliamentary democracy like that

of Singapore – especially when one is focused on the internal

contradictions within the culture as well as with active dissent?

Tan Pin Pin will comment on all these issues and much more in a

masterclass inspired by selected examples.

Publicity and Press: A Love Story?

Fr 01.11 16:30 Festival Centre, Basement Floor

Documentary filmmakers now are often given the advice that to make our films stand out, win awards and travel the world, we really need to engage publicists. And if we want an international circulation for our film, then we need reviews in the major international trade presses. Festivals also feel the pressure, because without attending international press, their relevance in the international circuit can rapidly diminish. Two film publicists from NOISE Film PR Mijram Wiekenkamp and Dagny Kleber will discuss their relationship with Vladan Petkovic from Cineuropa, debunking myths and giving a concrete glimpse into the mysterious world of film publicity.

Brothers Quay: Night*Footnotes

Fr 01.11 19:00 Schaubühne Lindenfels

... on their body of work, explored by themselves and exemplifies with ...

Footnotes are small peculiarities of great depth. Modestly set apart from the main body of the text, they are meant to prove and refer without distracting the reader. Footnotes are invitations to take a stroll through the undiscovered. The Brothers Quay have accepted this invitation. Using animation, light, camera and music they make objects speak which silently preserve their history in archives and cultural practices. They tell small, sensual dramas using puppets, objects and natural materials scarred by time and have had an almost unparalleled influence on international artistic animation.

To accompany the Homage, DOK Leipzig will in conversations with the Brothers Quay follow up some footnotes to their works, taking up keywords such as “subjective documentary”, camera and light as animated protagonists, what they do outside the cinema and the political responsibility of marzipan. To close the night, the Quays will take us to a servants’ school around 1900 with “Institute Benjamenta”.1

1 At the time, the Schaubühne Lindenfels (*1876), which hosts the Brothers Quay Night, was a ballroom. The scenery preserved until today remains discretely silent about many a passionate affair it observed then.
