DOCS to VOD
Survival in the shadow of the big players?
Our documentaries compete with countless audio-visual content offerings for the media budget and consumption habits of our potential audience. Not only do we have to prevail against free to use public media libraries and illegal download sites, but it's the global companies and platforms that are getting to us: YouTube, Netflix, Amazon and soon also Disney and Apple. Everyone wants the largest possible part of a pie that consists of the money and the screen time of the audience.
Is there an economic survival in the niche? What could promising strategies be? Subscription models (SVOD), boutique offers with download to own or rental options (TVOD)? Or is the best option your own Vimeo account or the video file on your cloud drive to provide on request? Is it a mix of everything? Or none of it? Maybe for filmmakers the fatalistic “If you can’t beat them join them!” triumphs.
Representatives of several European platforms and projects will present and discuss their strategies and expectations.
Before the discussion, Thomas Riedelsheimer will present the training project “Musenraum” for young documentary filmmakers.
