Positions

With Positions, we create a space for encounters and shared reflections. The films explore complex geopolitical and historical contexts, lay bare cracks and contradictions, open up new perspectives. Follow-up discussions with filmmakers and experts continue the dialogue and extend it beyond the cinema auditorium.

Between 1959 and 1981, the Franco regime had over 33,000 bodies transferred from more than 500 mass graves across Spain to the Valle de los Caídos – a monumental mausoleum erected to glorify the fascist victory. Decades later, relatives are still searching for the remains of their loved ones. Three families follow in the footsteps of the disappeared and encounter bureaucratic, legal and social obstacles that persist to this day. Drawing on director Manuel Correa’s own research as part of Forensic Architecture, a research agency that investigates state and corporate violence, the film reconstructs in meticulous detail what the regime sought to conceal. Digital maps, citizens’ archives, official documents and new forensic technologies reveal what remained hidden for decades. The result is a topography of terror that visualises the extent of systematic violence and brings to light the history buried beneath fascist monumentalism.

A transmedia documentary based on three years of research on the Murg river, this work takes its shape in a manner inspired by the river itself. Images and sounds flow from one piece to another, forming a documentary that is alive rather than set in time and bound to a single frame. “Becoming River” has many parts, four of which are exhibited here. Two 2-channel video installations (FLUSSORAKEL and STAU/FALL) share the same surfaces and run in a continuous loop. FLUSSKINO is a selection of documentaries, fictions and performances filmed along the river. HYDROSPHÄRE is a sculpture of video monitors that give an insight into the flow of the Murg. SCHWEMMLAND is a sound installation based on live data sent from a probe on the Murg.

By flowing through different media and projects, documenting the river for its nature, people and various identities, the piece becomes an investigation of a body over time, and the diversity by which one may be described.

The roles at the École nationale d’administration pénitentiaire, ÉNAP for short, are clearly allocated: the trainee prison officers on the one side, the teaching staff on the other. Guillaume Massart’s film maintains this separation in aesthetic terms too. Usually captured from the perspective of the pupils, “Detention” provides a look at a curriculum that is not for the fainthearted: how does one command the prisoners’ respect and obedience? What mental strains go hand in hand with the job? Can these trainee prison officers actually gain legal advantages in potential conflict situations? Over the film’s two-hour running time, a remarkable effect takes hold: as the pupils’ critical voices gradually fall silent, the prison system appears ever more questionable from the audience’s perspective. Can even a “proper” training lead to the abuse of power if this is not explicitly addressed and problematised? How does a uniform shape a person? Having spent a total of one year at the school for “Detention” and undergoing the training himself, Massart finds a unique tonality to convey an ambivalence that is both unsettling and claustrophobic.

Keren Kraizer left Israel at 20 to study dance in Belgium, but also to escape her home country and its divisions. A visit to her family at the start of 2023 prompts an unexpected desire to reconnect with where she comes from, a process of considerable ambivalence which she decides to document in a video diary. Plucked from everyday life with a beautifully intuitive grasp for structure and montage, the resulting words and images move back and forth between the personal and the political with an inevitability born of the current state of the nation: a conversation with her mother about the lack of vision for lasting peace; footage of a man being shouted at for waving a Palestinian flag during the protests against Netanyahu’s assaults on the rule of law; the heartbreaking poem in English texted to her by a friend she made on an activist trip to the West Bank who didn’t want to be filmed; the nocturnal chat with her new boyfriend while wandering the streets of Jerusalem about all the tensions boiling under the ground, a chat that turns out to be grimly prophetic. For Kraizer’s diary will soon be overtaken by events beyond her control, and ambivalence will give way to anguish and disbelief. What now? How to contain people’s pain? “We are the ones who walk barefoot on the shreds of hope. We didn’t create war, but we created poems from its ruins.”

Thick smoke clouds rise at the horizon. Oil bubbles from the ground. The gills of a dead fish are black. A sonorous voice recites a poem about blood, anger and the oil-contaminated landscape of the Niger Delta. A crowd of people join in for the refrain. Writer and activist Nnimmo Bassey has been protesting for decades again the oil extraction in the south of Nigeria and its consequences for humans, nature and agriculture. The Ogoni, an ethnic minority from the region, are particularly affected, with their whole basis for life under existential threat as a result. In the 1990s, they organised a powerful political movement, which was violently put down by the military government – also in the interest of Western oil concerns. How is it possible to put up political resistance in such circumstances? “Hope Is a Word” is the portrait of a man who believes in the power of poetic language. With his workshops, Nnimmo Bassey manages to mobilise a new generation of rhetorically and literarily gifted activists. When they read, rap or recite, the film puts their words into the frame in demonstrative fashion. Poetry becomes a political tool here. For a call can come from a verse, a call that others then follow.

Nearly every day in Isla Tibaguin, Philippines, the streets turn into rivers. Environmental disasters can take many forms, and this immersive documentary follows a slow-motion climate crisis that is daily and constant. In Isla Tibaguin, the water rises everywhere and it takes hours to subside, leaving residents wading in water. Cooking, cleaning, trying to study, all in water. The film follows Riri and Angie as they navigate life with and within floodwater, emphasising the significance of community in the face of climate instability and uncertainty.

The use of the immersive medium allows audiences to face this particular climate disaster first-hand, and to feel the anxiety which ensues. Within the virtual reality headset, viewers experience a mediated feeling of being within floodwater, in a manner which two-dimensional media cannot replicate. By employing the intimacy of VR, the film makes a slow and more invisible catastrophe feel like the emergency that it actually is.

As though on automatic, passersby walk the same path; one day indistinguishable from the other. Until a surprise encounter ruptures this everyday. There is a secret world in the central train station, one eerily similar to our own, but just off enough to destabilise reality. In this unassuming monolith there is a gateway to another world, or rather a story that takes place overlaid unto a glitch of reality. Viewers will encounter their own bodies disrupted, and peak into a strange encounter. And then, in the end, it will loop and start again.

In a unique approach to immersion, the piece not only toys with our own feeling of body and the shape of reality, but as well with the body and shape of virtual reality. By extending virtual immersion into the shape of a reflecting sculpture (rather than a headset), the work opens the door to portals of many shapes and sizes. Keep an eye out for the not-so-familiar and slide into the unexpected.

The only permanence in life is the absolute promise of decay. Decomposition is just change, and everything in this world, digital images included, are not exempt from demise. Yet it is their mortality that makes pictures all the more precious, and this work aims to highlight the beauty therein. Deterioration is inevitable, and in this work its pace lies in the hands of visitors.

Using photographs from the public domain, the work also calls into question the digital archive. Is the archive a space of permanence or is it merely a state of slow decay? The images are ones of public significance but of no sentimental value to the audience. Therefore the act of decaying images has no personal bearing. This relationship might change, though, once visitors upload their own photographs and become witnesses to their decomposition...

How much black humour does it take to defy the horror? “The Masturbator – The Adventures of Edgar Hilsenrath” delves into the radical world of the writer and Holocaust survivor Edgar Hilsenrath – one of the first who dared to face the trauma with grotesque wit and unrestrained laughter. In a mixture of animation and historical archive material, the film follows Hilsenrath’s alter ego from his novel “Fuck America”: a penniless, sex-obsessed writer in 1950s New York who is desperately trying to publish his memories of the ghetto under the title “The Masturbator”. Writing becomes an obsession, a provocation and an act of survival. Born in Leipzig in 1926, Hilsenrath’s path took him through Nazi Germany, Bukovina and a Transnistrian ghetto via Palestine and France to America and back to Europe. A journey through places of loss, hope and disappointment. A journey through a century in which the ghosts of fascism keep returning. Burlesque animations collide with raw, real-life images. This friction gives rise to the portrait of an artist whose books are international successes but who fell into obscurity in Germany. “The Masturbator” combines biography, memory and the present to create a film that is as unsettling as it is liberating, about the power of satire and the necessity to speak out against forgetting.

A dark room is so much more than it first seems. With patience and curiosity, it will come to life. In between four walls is a Cuban household, filled with objects passed down over generations that hold memories of the hands that kept them. As one walks through the room and interacts with its objects, the space begins to come alive. Visitors will take their own time and make their own way through the quiet evidence of a lived-in space, uncovering hidden moments waiting to be found.

Over the course of the piece, a clock runs a day in fast forward, and the room shape-shifts from the 1980s to 1990s and onwards, slowly, steadily, almost unnoticed. Time moves differently here. It is a piece that lives in the in-between, in the narrow space that treads the line of physical and virtual and in the cracks that separate days, years and decades. And it is precisely this in-betweenness that cultivates portals and the possibility of walking through a door and into a past waiting to be touched.

“Are we still in normal life or is this emergency life?” asks Tom, one of the protagonists. A flood separates a life in two – one before and one after. In this work we encounter people affected by the 2022 floods in eastern Australia, as they recall the moments in which everything changed. Described through miniature rooms, the piece recreates lost objects and spaces, rooms formed of memories. Beautifully and consciously crafted, the piece invokes a creative approach that radiates care, for participating collaborators, for audiences, and in the making process.

The project, centered on a virtual reality experience and including augmented reality components as well as workshops, was created in collaboration with people affected by the flooding. As the project continues to grow, it becomes a living archive of restoration, reviving lost objects. Like ducklings reappearing after a flood, life – albeit changed – does go on.

French critic and activist Michèle Firk died at the age of 31 and left little behind: several texts in the film magazine Positif, the draft script for a film never made, diary entries and a farewell letter in case of her death. Taking these writings as a starting point, Laura Cazador traces out her short, radical life in the late 1950s and 1960s. A life that is not just closely connected to film history, but also the left-wing discourses and anti-imperialistic movements of that era. Firk politicised during the Algerian War, got involved in Socialist Cuba and later joined the armed struggle in Guatemala. Ben Barka, Salvador Allende, Fidel Castro and Ché Guevara drift eerily through the fascinatingly dense archival material of this film – everything connected by the idea of the Tricontinental. The Havana conference that Firk worked on was supposed to be held in 1966 and call a new, non-aligned alliance between the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America into being. Having trained as a film director herself in Cuba, Cazador grasps Firk as a point of contention and of reference for her own filmmaking in the present. The film thus reflects on the connection between cinephilia and political engagement not just based on Firk’s texts, but also with the images of the “Third Cinema”.
