Hommage: Helena Třeštíková

For Helena Třeštíková, the most important cinematic material is time. For more than five decades, she has accompanied different people, often over many years, working with great sensitivity and extraordinary intimacy to create portraits of emotional force and social depth. This hommage extends from the early étude “The Miracle” to “Private Universe”, via “René” all the way to “A Marriage Story”. In the International Competition, DOK Leipzig is presenting Třeštíková’s latest film: “Bára – Diary of a Rockstar”.

Over three decades, Helena Třestíková observes the seemingly ordinary marriage of Ivana and Vaclav. Until we realize that “ordinary” can only exist for the casual observer.

Prague-based filmmaker Helena Třeštíková has been filming marriage stories since the early 1980s, resulting in several long-term documentaries. Ivana and Václav’s everlasting marriage covenant is the subject of observation in this episode, which ranges from the day before the wedding to the present day. Back then, in December 1980, Ivana is 21 years old and Václav 24. Both study architecture and marry “because we like each other. And other things. Things better not talked about.” The first child is born shortly after the wedding. Třeštíková is obviously attracted to certain places she keeps returning to, but mostly to people and the way they try to give their lives meaningful directions. In this “Marriage Story”, we discern an incredible desire for expansion and growth which becomes evident in an accumulation of objects, children and responsibilities – one of the underlying motives of the Strnads’ marriage which gradually unfolds over 35 years together.

When Quang’s sister Mai becomes pregnant out of the blue, one thing is clear to him: this new chapter in their lives will change the family forever. He picks up his camera. He works on the film on the film for seven years, collecting photos, diaries and telephone conversations. Using a DIY scrapbook aesthetic, he weaves the present together with memories and images from the past. We travel with Quang back to his youth in the northern Vietnamese province of Lào Cai near the Chinese border. Nine years his senior, his sister Mai introduces him to cool music and trendy fashion, while his mother Cuc dreams of a traditional family. This is a dream that is slipping ever further out of reach: her son is gay and her daughter is living with schizophrenia. As an adult, Quang moves to Hanoi, where he can finally feel free, and his distance from his family grows. Years later, Baby Guava brings Quang closer to his family again. The child brings them together, but also lays old tensions bare. Different ideas about what constitutes a “normal” life have long been met with silence. With brutal honesty and intimate, sometimes uncomfortable insights, Quang looks at his family and the unspoken pain and resentment that stand between them. And he also shows the hopes and efforts at finding understanding and acceptance despite everything in order to provide Baby Guava with a loving environment.

16-year-old Krzysztof was last seen on a bridge over Poland’s Vistula River in 2023. The CCTV camera briefly turned away, and by the time it returned, he had vanished. Following his disappearance, his father Daniel launches a relentless search in Poland’s largest river. As time piles up, the searches persist. Any tech that proves useful gets pulled into it, from drones to metal detectors, trackers, and even loaves of bread, sent floating down the current in the hope of locating the body. The camera matches these rhythms, dredging the river’s depths and combing its banks. The searches, showing the father’s restless energy and the sheer labour of this endeavour, mix with vérité scenes with his family, as well as news snippets about Krzysztof’s alleged sightings. Social media streams are scoured too, providing unsettling insights into the boy’s inner states. Director Michał Marczak – and by extension his camera – accompany Daniel, taking the audience along in a boat and into the heart of a family’s unresolved grief. As closure remains out of reach, Daniel starts assisting other searches, and sombre discoveries are made of other lives lost in the waters.

A Palestinian woman, Hind Mashahra, longs for motherhood, but this seems hardly possible as her husband is serving a life sentence in an Israeli prison and is barred from marital visits. Smuggling her husband’s sperm out of prison may be the only chance for her to become a mother again. The documentary follows Hind as she sets out on a risky mission to obtain and deliver her husband’s sample to a fertility clinic. Her repeated attempts are hampered by the traffic, checkpoints, and the short life of semen, perishing within just hours. Unadorned in its language, the film stays close to Hind’s inner experience in the throes of drama, shaped by the reality in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as well as in quieter moments of waiting that are no less charged. Weaving in accounts of other prisoners’ wives, the documentary chronicles a Palestinian woman’s journey as she pursues motherhood at an extraordinary cost.

The weather forecast announces temperatures of over 50 degrees Celsius. Jaqueline Zünd has travelled to the Gulf region and transforms the crushing heat into feverish images and a score that bears witness to the scorching winds. Yet not everyone is subject to these dystopian conditions to the same degree. While Tarik delivers food on his motorbike in long shifts, and Sophy trudges through a red-hot Dubai with a parasol, the wealthy settle down in air-conditioned rooms, some of them almost icy. In Kuwait, a palatial shopping mall is used for jogging. Meanwhile, an estate agent with a broken heart buys big blocks of ice in order to give the wild cats on the edge of the city a little relief. Zünd leaves room for the oppressive atmosphere to become palpable, for one to be overcome by a sense of existential hopelessness. “Death or emigration” is how a meteorologist describes the future vision for the region. “But no one listens.” “Heat” is a depressing preview, a nightmare scenario which sets its sights on the social dimension of the progressing climate catastrophe above all: at the start, it’s always the most vulnerable who can’t afford ignorance.

“Trees are life itself”, renowned botanist Stefano Mancuso says, leading a band of kids through what was once a densely wooded area. This becomes the setting for Victor Kossakovsky and Mancuso’s cinematically sprawling journey across Europe, even reaching Vatican City, following the fates of trees. In the Dolomites, trees stand like ghosts after the Storm Vaia devastated the forests. They became more vulnerable due to a planted monoculture of economically valuable fir trees. More damage then followed after the storm, as weakened and fallen trees became breeding ground for bark beetles. What do trees think or feel? Delving into their depths, the camera captures life that’s still sprouting and persisting. However, as winter matures, trees might not make it through the festivities. Chainsaws work tirelessly at fir-tree farms. Like strange cocoons, they are now packed in nets and bundled tightly, waiting for their send-off to homes and public squares. But people’s affection for them might be short-lived.

György Kurtág is a renowned Hungarian composer and a major figure of the post-war avant-garde. Born in 1926, he has now reached the age of 100, yet his mind remains wonderfully active. Living in an attic flat of the Budapest Music Center, he continues to work tirelessly with some of the world’s finest musicians who open their creations up to the humbling process of collaboration. Traversing geographies, the film takes us from his birth town of Lugoj to the different places that shaped him, from Transylvania to Budapest to Paris. It traces his early steps into the world of music, which began with dance and four‑hand piano sessions with his mother — something he later continued with his wife and pianist Márta. It then follows his life and many artistic collaborations, including with Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and British cellist Steven Isserlis. The film also weaves in the work on his magnum opus “Fin de Partie”. “The map is not the territory; the notes are not music…” To pianists Halla Oddný Magnúsdottir and Ólafsson, Kurtág has “found a way of writing music that is impossible to play without going beyond the notes”. It’s a sentiment shared by Kurtág, who remarks that it’s not about his ideas but about whether the piece, played by a musician, truly “happens” to them. A portrait of a man who lives and breathes music, composing entire worlds brimming with emotion.

Alberte and Nicole are mother and daughter, three decades apart. At 55 and 87, they still live together in a villa by Lake Geneva, having settled into a codependent dynamic: Nicole is reluctant to leave her mother, while Alberte struggles to let her go, fearing living alone. In a house filled with memorabilia, cats, and too many clocks, the familiar feels safe for the mother‑daughter duo who often doze off like synchronised swimmers. However, as time passes, the family grows concerned about Nicole’s autonomy. Nicole is considered neuroatypical, “ambivalent” regarding the perceived condition, and few facilities are equipped to provide adequate support. Nicole’s sister, Danielle, then decides to assist her in a search for a flat and a job. These scenes unfold alongside the family’s daily life and the intimate conversations in front of the camera. Nicole also embarks on a playful creative exercise with her filmmaker niece Lauren, imagining life’s many scenarios.

Martin doesn’t dream of a life full of riches. His greatest wish is a 1994 Honda Civic and a driver’s license. He joined his foster family at five months old. At nine, he received a diagnosis of autism, ADHD, and so-called attachment disorder. Then he met Casper, and the two formed a bond born out of their shared love for cars, Trabant jokes, and an understanding of each other’s struggles, shaped by their disabilities and early days spent in an orphanage that affected their self-esteem. Lensed by his brother, director Emil Langballe, with honesty and care, the film follows Martin as he is caught in a spiral of drug addiction and troubles. All the while, he and Casper continue patching up their Honda Civic. A film about ruptures and repairs, of cars and relationships, support systems, and the tenderness of friendship.

“The future is a relative concept. It’s up to us to imagine it.” How right that well-coiffed television show host is, who toasts a possibly colourful future in black and white – at a time when people first set foot on the moon and tanks invade Prague, both with unforeseeable consequences. For who can really know how people will live in a few decades. When Petr begins a diary in 1974 on the day of his wedding with Jana in Prague, he has no idea how the world and his little family universe will develop – and how they will influence each other. When shortly afterwards Helena Třeštíková begins to follow Jana’s pregnancy with her camera, she has no idea that 37 years later this will become her longest-running long-term documentary so far: “Private Universe”. Petr’s diary entries provide the variable structure of this consistently light-handed family portrait. From the diary perspective, great political upheavals sometimes look like marginal notes, first teeth like major events. The changes in Czech society are traced on a small scale – a life between Karel Gott and John Lennon. The full dimension of the film’s title, however, becomes evident only when son Honza, the rebellious one, gradually turns into the actual protagonist. At the hour of his birth 37 years ago, he had no idea that he was already under the camera’s star. A lucky star?

Twenty years in which epoch-making upheavals unroll, in which systems, forms of government and regimes change – hinted at by television images that filter into René’s cell. The stagnation and absence of tempo “inside” is juxtaposed with a restless “outside” where René is moving in squares, at stations and in trains – without ever arriving anywhere. The link between inside and outside is the director herself, who becomes the only reliable constant in her protagonist’s life. A contradictory, up-and-down relationship that René reflects on in his letters to Třeštíková. Read out by him, they add another layer to the film in which the filmmaker virtually becomes the second protagonist. René, who with her help goes on to become a successful writer himself, turns out to be an equal, but difficult partner, drastically demanding her attention and questioning the relationship between filmmaker and protagonist again and again. The attempts to make him the co-author of this film are part of the story. A story of overwhelming power that goes right where it hurts.

Helena Třeštíková won the 2008 Golden Dove in Leipzig for “René”.

A handful of wrestlers – all members of the same, hugely hierarchical sumo stable (heya in Japanese) – prepare for the upcoming tournaments. Hiradoumi (24) is a rising star in the sumo world, who now has to live up to his early successes. Yokozuna Terunofuj is the reigning champion from Mongolia and at 33 is already reaching the end of his physical and mental powers. Kosei (15) has difficulties devouring the enormous mountains of food necessary in order to gain weight. And Yonezawaryu (19) is a promising newcomer who is repeatedly plagued with doubts. Erik Shirai stages his documentary sport drama in gripping, varied fashion: the jarring collisions between the fighters’ heavy bodies in the ring hint at the strength of these renowned martial artists, while repeated moments of reflection emerge at the same time. Shirai makes no secret of the fact that these sumōtori subject themselves to physical strains that may well end up drastically shortening their lives – severe injuries are hardly seldom, diabetes and other diseases the norm. On the other hand, “Sumo: Spirit Weighs Nothing” also emphasises the sensual, sometimes even spiritual side of the discipline. Maybe this will also prove to be an aid: in the ring, every athlete eventually comes face to face with themselves.
