International Competition Animated Film

Line, surface, colour, light, movement, time. Animated films are capable of creating an almost endless wealth of interpretations, transformations and reinventions of inner and outer realities from just a few primary materials. In this competition, international animation filmmakers demonstrate the narrative and technical innovativeness of their art, in both pointed short and feature-length formats.

It speaks from the thick smoke, first with one voice, then with two. I already knew you, it says, when you still had no form, I see you. The voice is deep, it regrets its biggest mistake: creating civilisation, which has multiplied, spiralled out of control, become all-encompassing. Christopher Galinos’s atmospherically charged experimental film moves back and forth between a lament and a (bad) dream. We don’t know who we’re supposed to sympathise with here: is it the 3D creature akin to a wooden sculpture whose long hands hold a small ball? Or is it the male figures that come forth upon the shimmering fabric, eventually covering its entire surface? Are we these figures? Galinos confronts us with these questions and ideas about creation myths and releases us again, lost in thought.

In an attempt to come to terms with the greatest act of violence that can happen in a father-son relationship, the cinematic first-person narrator initially comes to some logical conclusions: The Chinese once invented gunpowder, which can be used in the form of fireworks to drive out an evil spirit. Fireworks are a precursor of film animation; therefore, animation serves the same purpose. Intense brushstrokes and the material structure of the animated drawings, repeated runs through the sequences and the impressive interplay between visual and acoustic abstraction and figuration, in order to find an expression for the unspeakable, powerfully convey the emotional turmoil. However, the laborious process of drawing the single frames for this animation also creates an unwanted intimacy between the narrator and his evil spirit. Drawing from a personal story of trauma, Juan Camilo González develops an incredibly well-designed experimental setup, which, in its failure, brings back the horror all the more violently.

A visit to the place of one’s childhood, where love and hope seem to have made off long ago and mining parades, booze-ups and helpless adolescent rebellion with techno music around the campfire have become ritualized. With an unerring gift for observation and structure, Fidel Sievering and Bennet Staack convey the worn-out quality and smell of a Rhenish town that used to live on mining and where successful structural change refuses to move in. Here, time stood still a long time ago. The people move awkwardly through the narrow streets and corridors, like digital puppets with glitchy motor functions. The only ray of light is the old, discarded plans for the future of the place that are unearthed from a sealed mineshaft as a test of courage. Working with sometimes off-kilter scenes and sounds, found audio-testimonies and an uncompromising digital design, “Glaube, Sitte, Heimat” speaks honestly about decorative wall plates and suppressed pain, but also about an unshakeable belief in the “New Dream”.

At once animal and human, past and future: in its very first minutes, Sun Xu’s epically constructed animated film already opens up a visually exuberant narrative universe in which philosophical observations and an oppressive social satire merge in excitingly associative fashion. The director worked with hundreds of animators for more than ten years to bring “Magic Atlas” to the big screen – by way of woodcut animation, ink drawings, contemporary painting and Persian miniatures, while deliberately avoiding rotoscoping and other techniques not based in analogue image-making. Magic and escapism are urgently needed, for the fictional coal empire of Luocha imagined by Sun Xu is ultimately a totalitarian dictatorship whose inhabitants are kept in check by camera mosquitos and collectively-ordered amnesia. And magicians end up in prison, because flying – or even letting your imagination run wild – is considered suspicious in Luocha. When one magician comes across the orphan boy Xiao Zhi, magic (mental) possibilities emerge to escape this captivity – or is it voluntary surveillance? Reincarnation becomes an opportunity for liberation here in suitably vivid fashion.

A distant wood thrush is singing against the pitch-black backdrop of the image. A fly acoustically approaches with a massive, bass-heavy hum, abruptly stopped in its flight by the sound of a crash. Sounds so familiar that we are usually not even aware of them provided the main sonic material for the renowned sound designer Claude Beaugrand. His long-standing artist friend, filmmaker Pierre Hébert, dedicated his five animated fugues to him. Field recordings like those of the bird and insect derive their vitality from their recognisability through repetition, as well as from their ephemeral nature, with its random inflections and variations. Hébert forms a sonic body through stretching, echo loops and granulated sounds. And he scratches directly onto the film material, working against the physical resistance of the emulsion. Each “brushstroke” created this way has an unpredictable, intuitive element. Each powerful or tender graphic gesture radiates vitality. Just as the thrush and the fly meet acoustically, abstract bundles of lines flutter nervously on the surface of the screen and into its depth, circling the pared-down silhouette of a human being in free fall. Intertitles lyrically describe a pain that must be expressed but for which there are no direct words. “Prelude and Fugues – The Wood Thrush” is an indescribable experience of choreographed sounds, an inner cinema born of the delicate essence of animation and the irresistible enticement to listen intently.

How does the graphic gesture in animated film manifest itself, what specific eco-system are we talking about when we refer to line and movement? Aline Helmcke invites us to think about drawing for film and simultaneously celebrates the sensual act of drawing: whether with light or sand-like material or classic drawing tools, on paper or blank film, in associative scribbles or structuring lines. And so lines turn into insects, a whole flock of dots, a pattern of lines, an industrial landscape… only to dissolve back into lines once more. Fleetingly, imagery and meaning emerge from simple elements. The intuition of the drawing process and the planning exercise of drawn animation, the restlessly wondering human eye and the unrelenting camera eye freezing time, they all whir around each other in this intelligent and luscious cinematic essay.

In the beginning was the sea. In her poetic and quiet experimental film, Karolina Malwina Gruschka thinks about her relationship with water, interweaving biographical memories of learning how to swim and a primal sense of physical trust with reflections on climate change. The realisation that her own body, composed of 50% water, has a lot to do with the water covering the globe, is reflected on the visual level, too: Gruschka converts found footage material and her own holiday pictures to a colour depth of 1 bit, which creates an exclusively black and white visual field where the private and documented nature are no longer distinguishable. The images ripple like water, gradually changing from distant blurs to concrete documentary observations of calving glaciers, thus achieving a meditative effect: if we all perish in the end, we will at least all be reunited in the water.

In the beginning was the light, then the egg yolk … The yellow form, hungry for life, buoyantly throws itself into the world, stretching, jumping back and forth. The space grows bigger and gains depth; the playing field expands. Drifting curiously to Latin-American rhythms gradually turns into a restless, frantic rush accompanied by hyperventilating breakbeats. The yellow ball is reduced to a narrow, hasty brushstroke racing through the black cosmos, whizzing past turbulent colours and shapes – and vanishing. Using nothing but abstraction, “Tutaro” brings a small personality into the world and follows its path equally tenderly and uncompromisingly.
