Audience Competition

This competitive section brings together films from all over the world that arouse emotions, that take the subjective point of view, that can be humorous, surprising and warm-hearted. Like the whole DOK Leipzig line-up, they compete for the audience’s favour. Here, however, the audience themselves will also award the prize – via online voting after the films.

György Kurtág is a renowned Hungarian composer and a major figure of the post-war avant-garde. Born in 1926, he has now reached the age of 100, yet his mind remains wonderfully active. Living in an attic flat of the Budapest Music Center, he continues to work tirelessly with some of the world’s finest musicians who open their creations up to the humbling process of collaboration. Traversing geographies, the film takes us from his birth town of Lugoj to the different places that shaped him, from Transylvania to Budapest to Paris. It traces his early steps into the world of music, which began with dance and four‑hand piano sessions with his mother — something he later continued with his wife and pianist Márta. It then follows his life and many artistic collaborations, including with Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson and British cellist Steven Isserlis. The film also weaves in the work on his magnum opus “Fin de Partie”. “The map is not the territory; the notes are not music…” To pianists Halla Oddný Magnúsdottir and Ólafsson, Kurtág has “found a way of writing music that is impossible to play without going beyond the notes”. It’s a sentiment shared by Kurtág, who remarks that it’s not about his ideas but about whether the piece, played by a musician, truly “happens” to them. A portrait of a man who lives and breathes music, composing entire worlds brimming with emotion.

A handful of wrestlers – all members of the same, hugely hierarchical sumo stable (heya in Japanese) – prepare for the upcoming tournaments. Hiradoumi (24) is a rising star in the sumo world, who now has to live up to his early successes. Yokozuna Terunofuj is the reigning champion from Mongolia and at 33 is already reaching the end of his physical and mental powers. Kosei (15) has difficulties devouring the enormous mountains of food necessary in order to gain weight. And Yonezawaryu (19) is a promising newcomer who is repeatedly plagued with doubts. Erik Shirai stages his documentary sport drama in gripping, varied fashion: the jarring collisions between the fighters’ heavy bodies in the ring hint at the strength of these renowned martial artists, while repeated moments of reflection emerge at the same time. Shirai makes no secret of the fact that these sumōtori subject themselves to physical strains that may well end up drastically shortening their lives – severe injuries are hardly seldom, diabetes and other diseases the norm. On the other hand, “Sumo: Spirit Weighs Nothing” also emphasises the sensual, sometimes even spiritual side of the discipline. Maybe this will also prove to be an aid: in the ring, every athlete eventually comes face to face with themselves.
