Gandzani, a Georgian village close to the Armenian border. Friends since childhood, three young men from this largely Armenian community are gradually beginning to take different life paths: Henrikh is about to start studying in the capital. He’s worried about the Georgian government’s close ties to Russia, but he’s willing to take serious risks for his political ideals. Karlen, on the other hand, is dissatisfied with life as a shepherd, longs for the ideals of the Soviet Union and plans to go to Moscow as an immigrant worker. And Hakob has to rethink his role in the community when his long-distance relationship starts to crumble. In this airy, sensuous coming-of-age meditation, Marlene Edoyan creates a fitting space to show the period of upheaval between the spirit of the new, resignation and melancholy.

A public swimming pool complex in the middle of a forest which is soon to be renovated: between water slides, French fries, TikTok and sun cream, six teenagers spend the long summer days in the “Badi”, as outdoor pools are called in Swiss German. It is a place to discuss, laugh, try things out and simply hang out together. Whether on the grass, in the water or between the different pools, their conversations revolve around everything that currently moves them. This sun-kissed film accompanies these adolescents at a moment of transition. They talk about the past, think about the future and try to find out who they are and how they will find their place in a changing world. The film stays close to their glances, conversations and encounters, taking an unvarnished look into the inner world of these adolescents – their curiosities, their humour, their contradictions and their insecurities. For one summer long, the Badi becomes a place where childhood and future can exist alongside each other. And while the orange slide is dismantled, the question of what will remain of this summer bubbles up through the water.

While taking care of her young daughter, the director makes jelly. She reflects on the birth of her child and her own excessive perfectionism, which also extends to her artistic practice. The simple dessert develops into a “zoetrope pudding”. Once she lets go of her need for precision and allows relaxed playfulness into the working process, she succeeds in making a multi-layered cinematic dish. Its ingredients: sugar, silicon, plastic filaments. Kateryna Voznytsia manages many things at once here: to intelligently bridge the gap between contemporary working methods and historical techniques from the early cinema era and sensitively question her role as a mother, woman and filmmaker, all while also maintaining a loving bond with her daughter.

Anne (36) lives in Halle (Saale) and her life is in chaos. An apartment full of moving boxes, a yapping dog. She tells her mother on the phone that the electricity is about to be cut off again. Sometimes her daughter Leonie (14) drops by. Like her mother, she is at risk of slipping into drug addiction. Anne has already lost custody of her two younger children, too. The camera stays purely observational, captures loose scenes from the life of a woman who wants to take responsibility again. The film does not look for psychological explanations but shows Anne as she is. On her drives through the prefabricated housing estate, she seems isolated from her surroundings. Mother and daughter grow closer over an ice cream in a public square. Anne’s visit to her mother provides support but creates pressure, too. We grow ever closer to Anne, sharing her wish that she can become a role model for her daughter.

In an attempt to come to terms with the greatest act of violence that can happen in a father-son relationship, the cinematic first-person narrator initially comes to some logical conclusions: The Chinese once invented gunpowder, which can be used in the form of fireworks to drive out an evil spirit. Fireworks are a precursor of film animation; therefore, animation serves the same purpose. Intense brushstrokes and the material structure of the animated drawings, repeated runs through the sequences and the impressive interplay between visual and acoustic abstraction and figuration, in order to find an expression for the unspeakable, powerfully convey the emotional turmoil. However, the laborious process of drawing the single frames for this animation also creates an unwanted intimacy between the narrator and his evil spirit. Drawing from a personal story of trauma, Juan Camilo González develops an incredibly well-designed experimental setup, which, in its failure, brings back the horror all the more violently.

Abtin, a young anarchist from Iran, now lives in Greece after fleeing his own country. Back home he managed an underground library of banned books and was reportedly arrested, detained and tortured because he took part in protests. He continues his political struggle in Athen’s Exarchia district – a place of left-wing utopias and a fiercely contested site of gentrification: He joins the movement for refugees, squats in houses, protests against illegal pushbacks and fights for alternative ways of living, though his own situation is highly precarious, because every contact with the state can jeopardise his residence status. Director Jasmine Alakari follows Abtin over the course of a year, experiences his rage, hope and powerlessness, but also euphoria and solidarity. Time and again, the film returns to the question of how much political activism should be allowed to shape one’s life and what role violence plays in this. Meanwhile, the conflict with the police comes to a head in the street and Abtin finds himself in the crosshairs of the state. Alakari keeps filming but realises that she must also examine her own role. What does it mean to be an observer? How far can a film visualise the fears and hopes of a person who does not have the freedom to escape this situation? “Free Zone” has no easy answer to this question but passes it on. To us – the audience.

A visit to the place of one’s childhood, where love and hope seem to have made off long ago and mining parades, booze-ups and helpless adolescent rebellion with techno music around the campfire have become ritualized. With an unerring gift for observation and structure, Fidel Sievering and Bennet Staack convey the worn-out quality and smell of a Rhenish town that used to live on mining and where successful structural change refuses to move in. Here, time stood still a long time ago. The people move awkwardly through the narrow streets and corridors, like digital puppets with glitchy motor functions. The only ray of light is the old, discarded plans for the future of the place that are unearthed from a sealed mineshaft as a test of courage. Working with sometimes off-kilter scenes and sounds, found audio-testimonies and an uncompromising digital design, “Glaube, Sitte, Heimat” speaks honestly about decorative wall plates and suppressed pain, but also about an unshakeable belief in the “New Dream”.

Łukasz dreams of becoming a professional boxer. His mother Monika supports him as much as she can. But the fact that this means he has to move to a sport boarding school over 500 kilometres away is something she can’t fathom. For who will do his washing there and make sure that he turns up to training on time? For Łukasz, the move is a step towards independence, but also a test of his abilities among like-minded people. Between hard training, new friendships and first love, the boarding school doesn’t just become a springboard for his sporting career, but also the place where he comes of age. Over five years, Adam Roszkowski accompanies his taciturn protagonist on his way to the Polish junior championships. In a blend of observation and discreet staging, everyday training routines, family moments and a first date come together to form a narrative that is so close to its characters that the documentary format almost melts into the background. Entirely indebted to the principle of show, don’t tell, “Growing Up” also gives an account of the dedication needed for competitive sport and the price it carries as well as of the silent battles needed to go one’s own way.

The elephant is dead! But who or what has it on their conscience? Staged as a blend of ecological whodunit and fleetfooted documentary, Krishnamurthy’s animated film brings two different perspectives together. There is the wise voice of the Matti tree, which, like the Indigenous Soliga community, has found its own traditions and rituals for dealing with nature. And then there is the academic, discursive voice which conveys insights in the form of a butterfly. They also each have their own approaches to presenting their ideas about what really happened to the elephant: the Matti tree sings its pearls of wisdom which are visualised by way of drawings and timelapse; the butterfly prefers to make the most recent scientific developments visible as a stop motion sequence in the laboratory. The two of them slowly get closer to each other – for only together will they catch the murderer.

In their filigree drawings populated by hybrid creatures, Polish twin sisters Alicja und Bożena Wahl didn’t just explore themselves, but also the close relationship they shared. Helena Stańczyk’s animated film brings these drawings to life and supplements them with collages and texts taken from Alicja’s diary entries from the 60s and 70s. At times directly addressing her sister Bożena, Alicja’s voice gives an account of surreal dreams and events involving her daughters while reflecting upon memories. Shot through with different physical and mental motifs, “I’m Painting a Self-Portrait, but All I See Is My Sister’s Face” is a film teeming with different elements, abruptly propelling the viewer into a place of artistic symbiosis and female self-discovery. A tribute to two women who left their mark on the Warsaw art scene and have received increasing international attention posthumously too.

Staßfurt, GDR, 1990. For years, hundreds of children from Namibia have grown up in the “School of Friendship” and its attached boarding school – far from their families. Integration into the life of the small town was never intended by the GDR leadership. When the political system collapses with the fall of the Berlin wall, the adolescents get caught in the crossfire of politics and the media. The film follows them through their everyday life and gives them a voice.
