The Portuguese documentary Cativeiro (Captivity) by André Gil Mata is the winner of this year’s Doc Alliance Award.

The award was presented to the director on Monday as part of the Doc Brunch, a special event at the Cannes Film Festival dedicated to documentary film. The seven festival directors affiliated with the Doc Alliance congratulated the winner personally.

In his acceptance speech André Gil Mata stressed the importance of the Doc Alliance for the spread of artistic documentaries: "For a long time I was not interested in the documentary. At least in my home country, the distribution of the documentary is not linked to the cinema but is dictated in very narrow and standardized terms by television, which I find very sad. I hope the Doc Alliance can help us change this situation and create ways for the documentary to be a real independent cinematographic practice."
