Making Space for Queer Cinema – The Curators’ Role

DOK Industry Talk 2026

Making Space for Queer Cinema – The Curators’ Role

small

At a time when queer film making is facing increasing political and social pressure in many European regions, film festivals can play an important role as spaces of visibility, encounter and solidarity. This conversation brings together three curators from different festivals to explore how to create space for queer cinema within festival programmes. What can film festivals do to foster queer community-building and support film makers in their early careers? What does it mean to curate through a queer lens? How do curators think about their audiences when shaping a programme? And when curating not specifically for queer audiences - how do curators challenge mainstream depictions of queerness and promote intersectional story telling?
