Thinking out of the Box - Master Class with Mariola Brillowska

Thursday 1 November 2012, 10:30-13:00 h
Polnisches Institut

Mariola Brillowska’s persona and presence make an artistic statement in and of themselves. She has been a fixture of the German and international art scenes for more than 30 years. But it is difficult to categorize her because with her exhibitions and installations, she is as at home in the visual arts as she is as a performer on stage. And since 1988 she has been making animated films. They are colorful, eccentric and never boring, thanks to her gift of being able to search out the sore spots of civilization and expose what others would prefer be kept hidden. She analyzes the present with all its perversions and delusions, philosophizes about the future and opens up fascinating alternative worlds. Her style is unmistakable. The films are characterized by bright colors and mutated human and animal bodies living in a technological world, and her protagonists constantly and consistently use sexuality to achieve their goals and satisfy their needs.

Mariola Brillowska was born in 1961. She grew up in Poland, where she attended an art school before emigrating to Germany in 1981. In Hamburg, she studied at the University of Fine Arts. She later taught there, as well as at the University of Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg and the University of Art and Design in Offenbach. She has been a professor of free drawing and illustration in Offenbach since 2007.

In her Master Class, Mariola Brillowska will reveal her secrets and let the audience into her artistic universe and working methods. In addition to her own work, selected films by her students in Offenbach will also be presented. The Master Class is kindly supported by the Foundation for Polish-German Cooperation.
