Brasil, Brasil: Making Documentaries Today [118.3MB/mp3]

Friday, 1 November, 17:00 - 18:30 h
Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig

Most of us only know the clichés about the largest country in Latin America: football, Carnival, samba and caipirinha.

Despite the country's long and varied cinematic tradition, only a little, if any, of its cinematic output makes it to Europe. DOK Leipzig wants to change that and is dedicating a special programme to the country, consisting of 10 films by predominantly young directors. The works reflect the profound transformation of Brazil, which has been driven by the economic boom of recent years and which, together with upcoming major sporting events, has triggered a wave of optimism and belief in progress. But this wave breaks at structural deficits, social contradictions and the socio-cultural and environmental consequences. Exciting times for directors who capture reality on screen with experimental and unconventional approaches. How do filmmakers in Brazil see themselves? Is there a specific Brazilian approach to documentary filmmaking? How are documentaries produced and funded in Brazil? And to what extent are they oriented toward co-production opportunities? How do documentaries in Brazil reach their audience? And how do our Brazilian counterparts see us Europeans?
