A kitchen table with several objects on it stands still. But time provides movement. A candle burns down rapidly, a photo draped on the table comes to life. It shows a young woman making a cup of tea. Old hands approach the table to touch the letter lying there. Life on the photo stands still.

Bill Sebastian’s Outer Space Visual Communicator (OVC) was constructed from lights, mirrors and projectors, as well as video effect and mixing equipment. It could be played like a live instrument with hands, feet and even the mouth! Here, we get a glimpse of the OVC’s kaleidoscope visual effects, which were used by the Sun Ra Arkestra to “visualise soundwaves” as part of their touring cosmic stage show.
