The Pool or Death of a Goldfish
A fishing hook pierces the lips of a lonely swimmer. Shortly afterwards, the young woman finds herself served up on a bed of salads, shrunk to the size of a goldfish and being carved up piece by piece under the critical eyes of two gourmets. Despite the pain she remains submissive, wishes them bon appétit and warns wistfully: “I don’t know if I will fulfil your wishes in your bellies.” Soon the swimmer will turn out to be the daughter of the two gourmets; the bittersweet, macabre opening one of many variations on the dilemma of unfulfillable parental expectations. The unsaid and suppressed dominate the artfully interleaved stop motion images that navigate fluidly through phantasies and memories. Time and again, they take the form of water: Puddles become brooks become swimming pools. And the question of one’s identity is decided at the edge of the pool.
