In the course of a year, the wine-growing region of Beaujolais in France is transformed, and it transforms the lives of those who cross it. While we observe the evolution of nature and the gestures of the Cortay family’s work, we meet seasonal workers who, for different reasons, come in the summer to bring a polyphony that merges with the nature of the place. A search for lives in a cycle, which presents us with a confluence of such disparate experiences in a small village in Europe.
Voicing the Land is a powerful and visually striking documentary about people who find themselves in the middle of some of the greatest dilemmas of our time. The film explores why people are so infuriated by large-scale interventions in nature, even when justified by the need for more energy and new resources. Are they protesting against development for a better future, or are they pointing to a real problem when they say that wealthy companies are gaining too much influence? Should we give up valuable topsoil to build a battery factory – or a bird paradise for a wind power company? Are the revenues from a mine more important than life in the fjord?
Director Kieran Kolle documents how controversial green development projects can contribute to dividing local communities and weakening trust in democracy, but also how people unite in the fight to preserve nature. The result is a gripping film that weighs the value of nature itself against the values we can derive from it.
