Jaak Kilmi, born in Tallinn in 1973, is a graduate of Tallinn University, where he studied directing. After having produced a number of commercials he switched to short and documentary films and later also realised two feature films. His works enjoy international renown and have won a number of prizes, including the Special Jury Prize at the Moscow International Film Festival for "Revolution of Pigs" in 2004. In 1997, he was awarded the Principal Prize of the International Short Film Festival Oberhausen for "Came to Visit". Kilmi is a member of FIPRESCI and has taught directing at the University of Tallinn and the Estonian Academy of the Arts since 2001.
