We don’t see or hear much coming out of Western Sahara. The region was annexed by Morocco in 1979 and the Moroccan occupiers were able to impose an almost complete media blockade since then. For years, activists of the Equipe Media group have been the only ones who covertly film rallies, police brutality and human rights violations and smuggle the material abroad, while they themselves frequently get in the line of fire of the occupation forces.

What would a documentary about a man from Jarosław look like whose biography records no special events – while the big dramas happen on the television monitor? And yet this is life as lived: work, coffee, headache pills, vacations. A house that’s too big now that the children have moved out. Marcin Podolec in a touching way transfers his father’s life into the world of comics and creates a new genre in the process: the animated long term observation.

At first there’s nothing but clouds. A cock crows, sheep bells ring, a herd of cows begins to move. The sounds seem to come from another age. When the morning mist clears, we recognize the outlines of an abandoned village. Decayed huts, broken fences, crooked roofs. The film looks like an oil painting, a still life painted in sometimes delicate, sometimes broad brushstrokes, bathed in different lights with the shifting times of day and changing its mood.

Ever since her husband and son were dragged out of the car and kidnapped by strangers four years ago, Lulu has drifted through her life in Mexico like a ghost. Though there is no trace of them she can’t stop searching. When is the right time to bury one’s hopes? Tatiana Huezo visually translates Lulu’s story into a reality that has cracked and shows the invisible: the feeling of absence – but also a path back to life.

A ship scrapyard in western Cuba. The observing camera follows Raudel and his colleagues who work in what seems like a hermetically sealed microcosm. A homing pigeon strays into the place; the workers contemplate it silently as they smoke. Sometimes they talk about their dreams. Shots are focussed in turns on their bodies and their surroundings. Rhythmic, artfully crafted and authentically produced sounds accompany precise and lucid images, without aestheticizing the harshness of their work.

The hairdressing salon “Saïda” is a space where people speak openly, laugh and argue. The subject rarely is hair. In the run-up to the presidential elections in Tunisia the shop turns into a political arena where the women – young or old, conservative or with a modern outlook – indulge in discussions about the pros and cons of the candidates. Their clever and witty statements reflect a young democracy with all its rifts and fault lines.

The letters on a departure board turn into grey figures with trolley suitcases hurrying through the high security airports of this world. A red wall abruptly puts an end to the journey of a restless man whose wide-spread arms melt like Icarus’s wings. Reality is punctured and the fatal contradictions of our globalised world are metaphorically exposed. Michaela Müller spent six years condensing her original sound sketch stills into a work of art.

Testimony versus “prosthetic memory”: The director dubs the sound recordings of her grandmother, collected over a period of ten years, in which the old lady recaps her encounter with a tornado as a child, in front of a green screen. While the details of her memories change through repeated narration over time, the found footage from feature and disaster films, weather reports and landscape images suggests a mediatised participation in the events.

Emmy lays out Euro coins in a row: “That separates me from you, see?” There are actually more than a few coins between Emmy and André, two young adults from Alcoitão, a town in the Alcabideche municipality near Lisbon. Leonor Noivo’s direction is striking and highly professional, like many of the works coming from Portugal these days. It’s still a documentary – Noivo witnesses a biographical and emotional in-between state.

In times of terror and blue algae, cruises have replaced the holiday resorts in Antalya and the Costa Brava as the perfect travel destination for package tourists. The ships move across the global seas like floating cities and the never-ending spectacle aboard makes shore excursions almost redundant. Once you’re immersed in the structure of forced pleasures you can have ceaseless fun with aerobics, dancing competitions and captain’s dinners. At least while your money holds out.

Children perform a puppet theatre version of the fairytale of “The Wolf and the Seven Young Goats”. They identify so strongly with their roles that the boundaries between acting and real life begin to blur. In restrained colours, the drawn animation shifts between these levels. For the boy who plays the big bad wolf the performance ends in an emotional borderline experience. This film is based on a collection of poetry by the Iranian children’s and youth book writer Afsaneh Shaban-nejad.

Tszzzzidd – skin and adhesive tape separate slowly, almost lasciviously. From a sober physical point of view, forces between molecular bonds are being overcome. Yoriko Mizushiri composes brief, highly sensual variations on pain and pleasure based on this phenomenon. Restrained, calm and scalpel-sharp, she creates two-dimensional drawn animations in subdued colours, accompanied by cool electronic sounds that explode in one’s head only to scatter into the anxious but curious body.

A young Swiss woman searches for her Armenian roots. Various lovingly animated drawers of the simultaneously accumulating family archive open. This very personal examination of collective traumas of post-migrant communities finds images and words for racism and the difficulties of talking about feelings with male family members. Its leitmotif is a wardrobe roaming through night-blue landscapes which – despite the cracks – holds everything and everyone together.

Asho knows not only how to deal with goats, he also knows about films. He tries to see at least one a day. His favourite director is Tim Burton. Always on the road (Asho means “eagle”), the Iranian shepherd’s son dreams of being an actor. By his side: his cousin and future wife Pari. Pari thinks that if Asho becomes a star, then so should she. But they both have been for a long time: This is their behind-the-scenes.

What starts with a factual Power Point presentation of a data survey about life satisfaction in Europe soon turns into a truly sensual journey. Diagrams break out of their x- and y-axes. Colourful columns, circles and lines become actors in infographic landscapes, behaving more and more euphorically: Age pyramids dance, bars merge into figures and rise together to a climax. An orgiastic world of statistics, who would have thought!

Hiding: behind masks, the white balloon, a fiction. The fears run deep. After five years in exile in Europe the director returns to Iran to make a film. She asks her friends to act in it. What starts as a game during the shoot gradually turns into a brutal clash between those who stayed and the one who left. Who has the prerogative of interpretation? What is a stereotype, what does the West want to see, what do the Iranians want to reveal about themselves?
