DOK Leipzig opens tonight
The 57th International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film officially opens tonight, 27.10.2014, at 19:00 at the Leipzig CineStar cinema complex. Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Leipzig, and Thomas Früh, Director Saxon State Ministry for Higher Education, Research, and the Arts, will welcome the approximately 800 national and international guests of DOK Leipzig 2014 with opening remarks. The keynote speech will be delivered by Festival Director Claas Danielsen. Dr. Grit Lemke, Head of Film Programme at DOK Leipzig, will host the evening.
The festival will be kicked off with screenings of the animated film PATCH by Gerd Glockell, and Laura Poitras film about Edward Snowden CITIZENFOUR. In the last instalment of her 9/11 trilogy, the multiple award-winning director shows how the United States’ so called “War on Terror” is directed against their own citizens.
All in all, DOK Leipzig will present a total of 368 films from 62 countries this edition. A total of 46 documentaries and 34 animations are competing for the coveted Golden Doves. 41 films will see their world premiere at this year’s DOK Leipzig festival, 29 documentaries and 12 animations. During the festival week, 170 works will be screened in various Special Programmes in addition to the 198 films in the Official Programme. The entries in the official programme were selected from among 2,350 submissions from 119 countries.
