Helena Třeštiková (Czech Republic) for the film
Soukromy Vesmir (Private Universe)
With “Private Universe”, the MDR Film Prize goes to a film by Helena Třeštiková for the second time. This time, it is the director’s most extensive long-term film project. Beginning with the birth of her friend’s child, she has documented the history of a small family universe together with archive footage of historical events in the Czech Republic since the 1970s. The future, as none of the people involved would have imagined it at that time, becomes reality in the film. Supported by the diary perspective of one of the protagonists, the film succeeds in combining extremely intimate and private matters with the social course of history in a unique and vivid way. It is precisely this combination which has caused the film to become a small sensation.
