Peter Liechti is from out of this world (that I'm sure of!), a wise stranger. His four films in our homage are so diverse in all respects, of such unearthly beauty and casual realization that they escape all earthly description or experience. With Liechti, the loving is uncanny, the sublime comical, the failing withdrawal successful exploration.
Each film is an audio-visual journey to the next uncharted planet, full of surprises and lonely, tragic and joyful beings: artists, smokers, Swiss folk, suicidal individuals, parents.
Signer‘s Suitcase – On the Road With Roman Signer
Lucky Jack – Three Attempts to Stop Smoking
The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy
Father's Garden – The Love of My Parents
(Best to see the latter with your own parents!)
Simon Baumann describes in Zum Beispiel Suberg the paradigmatic disintegration of the community in his native village; like Liechti, he does not give himself over to the pervasive melancholy and resigned mood of the inhabitants, but in the jumble of eccentricities looks for occasions for optimism. Wonderful music, a brilliant special effect (!), such a thoughtful and entertaining film.
