DOK Neuland 2019

DOK Neuland

welcome to the real world

Truth be told, the real world doesn’t exist. What’s subsumed under this term is a large and highly ramified, even contradictory system of perspectives and realities of life. Seen in this light, the truth always belongs to the one who defines the reality in which it has validity. In the works exhibited at DOK Neuland 2019 the focus is on truth and reality, but also on the limits of their validity which run between nations, global places, skin colours, times, religious confessions …

Must we accept that film art can “only” speak of a truth and reality that ranges from the opening to the final credits? Interactive narratives refuse to obey these limitations. They postulate that (and test how) worlds of experience can be shared – through a self-directed gaze, through participation in the life of the seemingly other that goes beyond watching. DOK Neuland 2019 does not want to invite people to submerge themselves in immersive worlds. Instead we call upon the audience to leave the matrix in their heads and enter universes of experience that question the status quo of an imputed “world truth”.

Exhibited Works

DOK Neuland invites from 29 October to 2 November to discover and experience 12 interactive and VR works. Read more about the DOK Neuland projects

Spatial installation: Paula Gehrmann

In her work, the Leipzig artist Paula Gehrmann derives ever new installations from encounters with places and contexts. The result is a unique artistic and accessible moment. Her pared-down constructions are situated between functional object, spatial framework and sculpture. In the case of DOK Neuland 2019, this wonderfully hybrid construct forms landscapes of experience that provide an important instance of mediation between the VR experience and the physical exploration of the exhibition space.
