Tan Pin Pin
Singapore is only about the size of Hamburg, but nearly three times as many people live in that space. It’s no wonder, then, that stories seem to pile up in that Southeast Asian city-state. How does one find all these people, given a voice by Tan Pin Pin in so many of her works, within a culture that officially values inconspicuously conformist behaviour? And when does she know how to tell their stories and communicate their views and ideas – as full of different creative approaches as her work is? How does one deal with the explicit as well as the unspoken boundaries imposed by an illiberal parliamentary democracy like that of Singapore – especially when one is focused on the internal contradictions within the culture as well as with active dissent? Tan Pin Pin will comment on all these issues and much more in a masterclass inspired by selected examples.
