Gandzani, a Georgian village close to the Armenian border. Friends since childhood, three young men from this largely Armenian community are gradually beginning to take different life paths: Henrikh is about to start studying in the capital. He’s worried about the Georgian government’s close ties to Russia, but he’s willing to take serious risks for his political ideals. Karlen, on the other hand, is dissatisfied with life as a shepherd, longs for the ideals of the Soviet Union and plans to go to Moscow as an immigrant worker. And Hakob has to rethink his role in the community when his long-distance relationship starts to crumble. In this airy, sensuous coming-of-age meditation, Marlene Edoyan creates a fitting space to show the period of upheaval between the spirit of the new, resignation and melancholy.

“My life is a prison”, Adelina says. The young woman is smoking and looking into the camera, her parents sitting on the sofa to her right and left. In black and white and the narrow 4:3 ratio, this family scene feels oppressive: Adeline spent eleven years under house arrest here, with a father who refuses to accept her identity and a mother who seems loving but powerless. In Georgia, there is neither freedom nor security for trans persons like Adelina. Anti-queer attacks happen in broad daylight; the legal situation of the LGBTQ community has recently deteriorated further. When the protagonist at last leaves her parents’ village to go to Vienna, the style of Rati Tsiteladze’s debut film also changes. The lipstick glows red, the lights of the big city neon yellow. A different, freer life seems possible. But the freedom brings new challenges: financial and health problems, communicating in a foreign language – and loneliness. “A Song Without Home” is the intimate, impressionistic long-term portrait of a person who wants to define herself and clings to an unshakeable conviction: “No law can erase who we are.”

Through numerous video essays in film and media theory, Kevin B. Lee has played a key role in developing the form of the so-called desktop film. The elegant meta-staging reflects the fact that his digital desktop is research tool, media archive and distribution channel at the same time. Lee’s first feature-length film in this style dissects a historical work of propaganda: In 2014, the “Islamic State” terror militia, then at the height of its territorial power, published an elaborately produced film entitled “Flames of War”, which many media outlets compared to the aesthetics of Hollywood blockbusters. Lee manages to abstract and defamiliarize the extreme violence of those images, but comes to the realisation that their ideological power cannot be decoded by the tools of film analysis alone. “Afterlives” broadens the perspective and looks for alternative models in dialogue with experts from the arts, political education and terrorism studies: They reconstruct destroyed cultural assets, develop strategies against extremist radicalisation and study what motivates people to leave terrorist groups. In all this, Lee’s intelligent essay never loses sight of the colonialist western image of the Middle East.

Can a state of emergency become normality? Is everyday life possible despite the apocalypse? Bohdan would reply with a “yes” and a calm smile. He lives in Nikopol, Ukraine, on the former Kakhovka Reservoir, which dried up rapidly after the Russian army destroyed the dam in 2023. Like most of Nikopol’s inhabitants, Bohdan has adapted to the constant bomb alarms and nearly daily bombardments – an unbelievable mental achievement which Anastasiia Bonadyha also captures using sound design and music, transforming it in the process: a music box plays a Viennese waltz, the howling sirens turn into the drawn-out tone of a shofar horn. Bohdan’s serenity and optimism are deeply rooted in his faith. As he puts it, he’s not scared of death, he will come to God anyway. Living and enduring, as long as possible: shot on a Super 8 camera, Bonadyha’s film is a moving time capsule, a moment of hope amid the impositions of the ongoing war.

Created using still and moving images sourced from NASA’s STEREO satellite solar observation mission, “Black Rain” turns unprocessed scientific data into a raw and glitched-out perspective on nearby interplanetary space. Embracing the artefacts, the film gives us an unmanicured and almost voyeuristic view of space, distant from the glamour of sci-fi or the carefully colourised images normally released by NASA to the press, as we track solar winds, coronal mass ejections and passing comets, sometimes recognisable only as blurs of lines and pixels, across a monochrome background of stars and the milky way.

Cara terra, dear Earth! This sensual cinematic love letter is directed to the Earth, to the fields of the Arvaia Cooperative close to Bologna to be more precise. There, they sow, harvest, water and tend to the plants with dedication and without the use of large-scale industrial machinery. People here are just fleeting presences: Emma Harris places the visual focus entirely on the flora, from the soil to the buds, from wide shots of the horizon to the overlapping branches and leaves which become just more abstract structures to joyfully lose oneself in. Her loving, precise gaze is also captured in textual form: delivered by two voices, the love letter is not just a huge thank you to the Earth, but also the expression of a desire that humans don’t work against, but rather with nature in the future. It’s entirely in line with these ethical, agroecological considerations that “Errabonda” was made by way of analogue processes low in harmful substances.

Pioneering multimedia artist and computer animator Lillian Schwartz created “Galaxies” during the early period of her 33-year tenure as artist-in-residence at renowned North American research facility Bell Labs. The piece draws on modeled simulations of galaxies from NASA’s Langley Research Center, which were rendered on a powerful mainframe computer and given to Schwartz to turn into a complete film. Schwartz, who had a background in Japanese calligraphy and painting and whose work often intersects art and technology, approached the material creatively, layering, distorting and colourising the images to breathe new life into the scientific data, with visually striking effect.

The RK12 galaxy is twenty-eight billion kilometres away from earth and contains a sandy desert planet inhabited by an extraterrestrial species. Without sunlight, these creatures live off the energy of movement itself. They produce time, love music and push their mortal gods back into space when they are tired of them. A fictitious reportage that showcases Piotr Kamler’s extraordinary skill. In addition to a feature-length sci-fi film, the Polish avant-garde film artist created a number of original and technically outstanding short films. “Green Planet” is a masterful stop motion animation in which Kamler brings delicate shapes made of fine sand to life. Carefully directed lighting, contrasts and focus create a fantastical world whose spatial depth is impressive. The music by Ivo Malec, a pioneer of electro-acoustic and New Music, reinforces the otherworldly atmosphere of the distant setting.

A Slavic legend whose essence can also be found in Tibetan records inspired the two Soviet scientists Mikhail Vasin and Alexander Shcherbakov to formulate their “Hollow Moon” hypothesis in 1970. In this hypnotic film, the Hungarian director, autodidact and graphic designer Sándor Reisenbüchler probes the theory in a highly poetical manner, sending us across the centuries from an imagined past to a distant future. His unmistakeable collages, which he brought to life with meticulous precision working alone at the animation table, combined with experimental moving image material, recall memories of analogue projections and the liquid light shows of the 1960s. Organic shapes and colourful patterns generate a fascinating pull which carries us through a magical portal into a hypothetical space ship inside the moon.

In November 2013, the European Space Agency (ESA), as part of the SWARM Mission, launched three identical satellites into orbit to study our home planet’s magnetic field more closely. The translation of the measured data into sound makes the fluctuations in the magnetic field of our planet audible. Kamil Czapiga, whose intermedia art project “Cosmodernism”, founded in 2019, is an exploration of a very personal version of abstraction in the micro- and macrocosm, combines these sounds with fascinating material from his moving image universe. Even though they seem alien and unreal, his compositions are made from entirely earthly ingredients like oils, dyed water and magnetic liquids, which are stimulated to undergo chemical reactions in microscopically small film sets. Home-made mechanisms and special lighting enhance the resulting footage to a visual experience that seems out of this world.

Since the Kosovo War over 25 years ago, Mitrovica has been a city divided along ethnic lines. The north is primarily inhabited by Serbs, the south is Albanian. Everywhere in the city, there are impressive, yet dreary ruins with blossoming cherry trees before them: the war and the division it caused are at once omnipresent and invisible. In his poetic experimental film, Marko Grba Singh captures this paradox in static shots. With no dialogue, but featuring two wonderful poems by Latif Berisha and Aida Šečić Nezirević, the film conveys the experience of saying goodbye to one’s own mother and painful, enduring loss in general – with trilingual subtitles reflecting the geographical divide: Serbian at the top, Albanian at the bottom, and English in between. Right in the middle of it all, left alone with the historical and urban heritage of their mothers and fathers, are two young people who seem lost, standing alone in the landscape. It makes no difference in which part of the city one might now place them.
