Werner Herzog at DOK Leipzig
Werner Herzog is without a doubt among the most influential German filmmakers in the history of cinema. Over the course of his career as a director, he has made more than 60 documentary and feature films. At DOK Leipzig 2018, he is not only presenting his new film Meeting Gorbachev as the opening film – his documentary work is also the focus of a Homage bearing the title ECSTATIC TRUTHS.
In the scope of this tribute, Herzog will also give insights into his work in a special DOK Film Talk, taking place on Tuesday, 30 October, at 10:30 am at Kupfersaal Leipzig. He will speak with Kristina Jaspers, curator of the Homage, about his most important documentary films, with a particular emphasis on his work from recent years. The majority of these films were made in the USA, and only a limited number of them have received theatrical releases in Germany. In addition to his filmmaking, lesser-known aspects of Herzog’s work will be discussed, including his cameos in animated films, appearances as an actor and his highly successful art installation Hearsay of the Soul.
The audience of the Homage can expect to meet humans caught in extreme situations in Herzog’s films. Whether it’s an animal rights activist face-to-face with a real life grizzly bear, the bottomless pit of the personal void of condemned murderers on death row or Werner Herzog himself eating his shoe.
